Stony brook vs. Baruch

I want to go to stony brook, and major in applied math, maybe minor in finance, and eventually become an actuary. I've heard mixed emotions about the business and math departments.

Do you guys think that it would be better if i go to stony brook and major in such as stated above, or go to baruch (with a full ride) and major in finance/actuarial science?

I am looking for the best job placement after college.

Thankssssss =)

Stony Brook is best known for the Sciences and Engineering. It isn't known for its business degree.

Baruch College is best known for Business and Finance. In fact, its Zicklin School of Business was SPECIFICALLY Designed to specialize in these areas.

Based on what you say you want, I'd say that Baruch would be the better choice.

Since your from NYC I think Baruch would be the best fit.

I would go with Baruch also.

Baruch all the way!!!! They have great career placement in the field of business. The only problem for me at least is that Baruch has no dorms, but you can stay at the ccny dorms. The Towers as they call it has a lot of Baruch students. The Towers at CCNY - The Towers Main

Thanks so much for your answers everyone.
I think I might actually go to Baruch. It seems as though it will give me the best opportunities for job placement.

One more question if you guys don't mind,

would it be better if I major in mathematics & finance, or actuarial science & finance?

and how different would this be from the stony brook applied math major?

Thanks so much. One fear is holding me back from sending in my deposit; what if my field of interest shifts from math & finance to engeenering? what do i do then? lols.

Thank you so much again. I really appreciate your answers.

If anyone else has any opinions, DONT BE SHY! =))

Thanks =)

How available is the housing for Baruch?

Baruch is part of CUNY (City University of New York) system.

There is housing available for students --- they are called The Towers, all the students from the CUNY schools can live there.

There is also a company that works with CUNY to find housing for students.

See this site for Housing information for CUNY Students :

The Towers at CCNY - The Towers Main

See here for info regarding the outside company that can help CUNY students find housing :

Guys- I just did a real quick read. Are you sure the Towers is good for ALL CUNY students?? It seems that they were for CCNY students.
Now I know CCNY is part of the CUNY system, but I am not sure if the Towers was OK for all CUNY students (Baruch- Brooklyn, Queens college etc. etc.)
I may have missed it, but it did seem like it was for CCNY students.

It is for all students that attend a CUNY school. I am pretty sure of it. I read it somewhere, they had students from Baruch , Hunter, and BMCC speaking of their experience at the towers.

RE: One fear is holding me back from sending in my deposit; what if my field of interest shifts from math & finance to engeenering? what do i do then? lols.

Engineering is very math intensive and a lot of the courses you take in Math can be credited for Engineering ( e.g. Calculus, both differential and integral, as well as ordinary and partial differential equations and even statistics. And if you for instance are interested in computer engineering, then any courses in discrete math and linear algebra can be credited ).

My advise, find out at this point in time what math courses engineering majors take that intersect with what a math major would be learning. That will more or less tell you what courses can be credited in case you change your mind.

So, regarding math/finance vs. actuarial/finance, I'd say since you don't know what you want and could possibly shift to engineering, take the more GENERAL course -- MATH and finance over the more specialized one -- actuarial ( which deal mostly with risk management ).

I dont know where to apply? I got two options - stony brook or baruch collage. I want to do MBA so where should I apply for?

Of those two, this is a no brainer, Stony Brook. You can major in what you want and still go for an MBA. Baruch is very mediocre and has abysmal graduation rates. No housing except for the towers on West 130th street.

Stoney Brook is great school and a much better college experience.

Why are these your only two choices?

I’d also go with Stony Brook — it is an excellent school, particularly in the STEM fields, and it will provide you with a much more traditional college experience.

Did you do Baruch? How did it turn out? My daughter has to make same decisson.
