Stony Brook vs Columbia/Cornell

Hey, I've just finished my first year at stony brook and im planning to major in engineering. Ive heard the engineering program at stony is really good, but can anyone tell me exactly how good it is as compared to other schools, particularly Columbia/ Cornell which i am thinking of transferring into for my junior year. Also, how are the internship oppurtunities at Stony as compared to Columbia/Cornell. For example, stony has connections to BNL and that sounds pretty good to me but i would like a bit more info. Thx.

Internship opportunities vary. When you say internship, be more specific-- do you mean research? If so, there is plenty of that on campus. If you mean internships in large companies, well that is something that you will probably need to seek out on your own. Career office is not too helpful. I suggest emailing the head of the engineering college for more info.

I'm sure that there will be good internship opportunities, but how is the overall academic quality of the stonybrook science and engineering programs as compared to those of other schools, such as columbia, cornell, etc.. If those schools are better, would they be that much better. Any feedback would be useful. thx

Here is my overall observation about Stony Brook vs. Ivy league schools. First of all it depends on the program. I think it is a farce to say Stony Brook engineering is as good as Columbia/Cornell engineering. It isn't.

My thoughts about Stony Brook are precisely this: If you work hard, I mean really hard, you can really get into some great grad programs and get a great job. I know someone who did biomedical engineering at Stony Brook and got into MIT for biomedical engineering.

Just like at any school, yes reputation matters, but up to a point. At Stony Brook, it's about how much MORE are you willing to put in BESIDES course work. Research, actively looking for internships, going the extra mile. I you do that, then yes you can definitely get some cool job offers or grad admissions. Now, if you worked that hard at Columbia, yeah maybe you'd be better off, but by how much, I don't know. But also, going to Columbia involves taking on over 50k in debt, while Stony Brook is realistically, maybe 10k in debt?

It's hard to argue Stony Brook is just as good as Columbia. But Stony Brook gives you the opportunities to excel and compete with Columbia kids. This is why I tend to like Stony Brook MORE. I know at Columbia, Cornell, they mandate some kind of senior thesis or engineering internship or something like that. They dummy proof their programs, which is great because they get their kids a ton of exposure, but at Stony Brook, you have to be fierce and you have to be hungry to excel.

Stony brooks engineering isnt bad but compare to Columbia and Cornell i dont think stony brook can be compared. In ranking for engineer, Columbia and Cornell is much higher than Stony.
As for internships, you have to search for them yourselves. If you join organizations like IEEE, SHPE, etc. there is corporate mixers that allows company to recruit you on campus and that is your to give them your resume and get an internship.
