Stony Brook vs Farmingdale State.

So these two schools are the front-runners on where I'm going to go next fall.
I have:
92 GPA
1600/2400 SAT
25 ACT
1 AP Course
Part-time job.

If I go to Farmingdale I would be studying Computer Engineering and will dorm there. Because I have a higher GPA than what is the average there, I'd feel like it should be easier for me to excel there and possibly get above a 3.5 GPA overall. HOWEVER, I feel that this school isn't nationally recognized and prestigious as Stony Brook, which could be a slight determent for me. I also don't know about social life there but I heard there is a very close dorm community within the campus and a decent amount of clubs there. There is a car club there where I can fit right into, as well as the usual clubs (including frats but I don't consider myself a fratboy... yet).
One slight plus is I'll be able to keep my part-time job and therefore, be able to bring my car there (I SERIOUSLY HATE PUBLIC TRANSPORT). I took a visit there a few weeks ago and it looks fairly nice there, despite all the construction going on (some will be completed by the time I go in). It did look a little dry (maybe because it was a Sunday and it was only 2 or so weeks after Hurricane Sandy), but the tour guides and several people I've talked to say that they do enjoy being there. I'm not the biggest party person but I still want to be able to party occasionally. The college keeps getting better in rankings everyday but we'll see what the future holds.

Now Stony Brook. I also took a visit and it was such a great campus, but I do have a few reservations as I said before. First of all, I cannot be an engineering student because my SATs are slightly lower and I'm not competitive enough for the engineering program. I would go in undecided and I'd have no idea what I'd major in. I just think I'd be able to go further there but the problem is I would be undecided there.
Second, it is very dry (maybe even drier than Farmingdale) especially on the weekends. I do know someone that transferred from University of Maryland(?) and she loves Stony Brook much better. Obviously there aren't many parties but it seems slightly more sociable than Farmingdale. Now getting in could be tricky, but I do have the grades (or think I do), I'll have to see in a few months.

If you know any other colleges in New York that could be a decent match for me, please comment (no expensive private schools, won't be able to afford it).
Thanks for reading.

It seems like you want to study engineering? What about CUNYs. City College has engineering programs and they match your stats. RIT, Clarkson, Union College, buffalo, binghamton etc.

First of all, I applied to Stony Brook as a computer science major, so I know how you feel about the whole “my grades are not competitive enough” thing. Engineering and computer science are some of the school’s most competitive programs.

If you’re down to those two, Stony Brook might be a better option. Yes, it’s a suitcase school. When I toured the school, they tried to tell me that it’s not, but after asking around, I found out it is. However, Stony Brook is a much more challenging and reputable school. They have connections with a lot of influential groups that could very well help you succeed in your future. Plus, their engineering program is very impressive as well. If anything, apply and see how it goes. If you don’t get into the major of your choice, you might still have a chance to get admitted to the school itself. It never hurts to try.

As for school suggestions, the poster above me provided some very concrete suggestions into which you should look. They’ve all got very strong programs and very reasonable prices.

Best of luck to you!
