I got accepted to both. I am an international student from Bangladesh. Which one should be the better choice considering CS only? Btw, I have 0 programming skills and got accepted to pre-CS (AOI) in SBU.
Also, how are the people at both places? I don’t want to stick to my own ‘race’. I think I’ll like to have an active social life in College. Its not that I am looking for a party school or anything. I just don’t want to go to a place where people are …racists in these tough times
If money is not a problem, then Rutgers. Even if you don’t party, a good social life needs hand out places. If you google map both schools, it is obvious that Rutgers has more places to go.
About racism… in what standard? I believe people are not racist if they don’t treat me differently when I approach them. I think it is completely fine that any individual feels more comfortable to play with his/her “group”. So Stony Brook is not racist in my opinion. However, I do have 1-2 situations that a person is nice when alone, and get so tough when he(mostly he) is in a group.
Okay. Yeah that’s the type of racist I’m talking about. A lot of people act differently in front of groups, so thats fine.
Well money is an issue. Stony is costing me a lot less than RU. So yeah. My dad will be paying the full tuition and he’s a lot more comfortable with Stony’s tuition. But, I could get a scholarship from RU. And I have relatives in Long Island so that’s an advantage for me too, if I go to Stony Brook.
The important thing is, is the CS course a lot worse at SBU? How are the job prospects if I graduate from Stony Brook compared to RU? Will I be worse off. Payscale.com puts the two in very close range, as it seems.
Thank you btw
I am not going to compare which college has the better CS or CS courses. I have 0 experience with RU. I leave that to some statistic webs or the paid SB worker in this forum.
I experienced another college’s(as good as sb) cs courses because I am a transfer. The quality of my first college’s cs courses are higher because each of them is 4 credits. Each SB course is 3 credits, so it is more likely that a SB student takes 1 or more additional CS courses per semester. Sometimes, one SB course may be as hard as a 4 credit course (EX: 219, 220, 305, 308, 380, and 381). The professor decides the difficulty after all.
Jobs, jobs, jobs. There is a career center that helps write resume. And I am in SB Computing Society, the club helps write resume too. I think(1 year experience) there is a on-campus recruitment event every semester. Don’t get me wrong, I am not showing the chance of getting a job, there is just a event like that. There are companies like Amazon, Google, and some banks visit every semester. They are not here to hire people, but they introduce about their company and provide links to apply job. I just got my google swags from from Wednesday night.
I think those events are cool, but I already applied many summer internships online. It is important because most CS jobs have a requirement of 5 or 10 years of experience. It is good to build a resume, a software, and skill before graduate.
PS: Take that official guy like 5:5, he is going to splash you a new CS building.
