Stony Brook?????

HI guys.... So I am at the point of debating which college to attend and I am leaning towards SBU... But I wanted to know the Pros and Cons...

I live in NJ, so I am going to dorm. How are the dorms? I wanted a suite style dorm just because I am not willing to share showers and bathrooms with 10 other people from my hall... I realize that social life won;t be great in a suite style dorm... Which quads are the best for suite style?

I have not visited SB yet, so I don't know what the campus looks like.. How is it? Is it in a nice area?

I am going to study biomedical engineering, so how is their engineering program?

Lastly, do they give a lot of financial aid? I have not received my financial aid award package yet, so I have no idea how much I am going to be paying...

Overall, is Stony Brook University a good school?

Thanks.

I was also accepted to Stony for BME and I am debating between it and a more expensive private school. Stony is in-state for me so it’s very cheap.

BME is one of Stony Brook’s strongest programs and it is a fairly solid engineering school, so there is no doubt you will get a good education there. There are lots of good research opportunities, especially for people who are studying medical-related majors.

I was very underwhelmed by Stony Brook’s campus/location. Lots of commuters, campus is nothing to write home about, and the social life seemed pretty bleak. I’ve heard it’s basically a ghost town on weekends. However, that doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy it there. I’m sure there are some kids who don’t commute and love it there. Either way, I plan on visiting again before I make my decision.

The Long Island area is very…bleh. There’s not much to do off campus. Just some small shopping malls and restaurants. I don’t really know much about the dorms.

I’m not familiar with Stony Brook’s financial aid. I am in-state so I don’t qualify for need-based aid from Stony Brook. However, I received about 1/4 of the total cost of attendance in scholarships.

I would definitely visit. Stony Brook is a fantastic match for me academically. Now I just have to figure out whether I’ll truly be happy there.

Good luck!

Is Stony Brook the only University you were accepted at ? If yes You don’t really have a choice to look at pros and cons

OP, you are from NJ and SB is a NY state public U. You will only get federal FA - a Pell grant of up to $5550 if your family is very low income and a $5.5k student loan. Can your family pay the rest?

Stonybrook doesn’t give need based aid to instate students regardless of low income right?

^ Not much. There is TAP (state funded) and some small scholarships in different areas.

It does, but aid is not as good as what state flagships in some other states give to their in-state students. However, it is not as bad as what PA and IL students see from their state flagships.

You can check the net price calculator at each school. For example: <a href=“Net Price Calculator”>Net Price Calculator;
