stonybrook through eop

<p>hello this is my first post in this forum, and i would like to know what my chances are to get into stonybrook for computer science with my current grades, which are
*sat score 1700
reading 550 math 640 writing 510
*transcript average ~83
*ap global and ap computer science courses</p>

<p>would also like to know if service hours would make any difference?
thanks!</p>

<p>Your current stats are low for Stony Brook. It’s a big reach for you.
Are you a junior or a senior? What is your parents’ budget?
Look into Oswego, New Paltz, NYIT, RIT, SUNY Buffalo.</p>

<p>hi thanks for replying myos1634, i’m unsure of my parents budget but my sister has qualified for the eop system, and im currently a senior. thanks for the recommendation i will look into them.</p>

<p>also i was looking into other forums for stonybrook’s eop acceptance (<a href=“http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/suny-stony-brook/1461436-anyone-got-the-acceptance-from-stony-brook-for-eop-decision-fall-2013.html”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/suny-stony-brook/1461436-anyone-got-the-acceptance-from-stony-brook-for-eop-decision-fall-2013.html&lt;/a&gt;) and here’s what caught my interest:
I got accepted on 2/28/13
1550 SAT (2400)
68 average (100), 1.4 (4)
Mediocre essay
No letters of recommendation</p>

<p>I don’t know how I got in. I was also accepted to UB regular decision.</p>

<p>Okay, through EOP you have good chances if you have qualities that show grit, character, ability to withstand pressure. EOP looks at more than numbers.
(For the example you give: remember people post anything. It may have been someone making fun of EOP students for all you know. :s I am especially suspicious of the “no letters of recommendation” part - considering how EOP works, I doubt it’s true.)
If your sister qualified for EOP, you’d likely qualify for a lot of financial aid at many schools as your parents’ budget must be very small.
Also look into HEOP: these colleges are very selective but you may have a chance at Hobart&WilliamSmith, St Lawrence, etc. They’re smaller so you’re less likely to fall through the cracks and the tight-knit community is great if you’re a first-gen student who’s leaving home (better than being left fending for yourself at a large university).</p>

<p>thanks alot myos1634, i really appreciate all the help and tips, i will take it all into account! </p>

My stat were sorta similar to yours. Reading 560 Math 450 Writing 520 and a average of 82. I got in through academic part did you?

Yes, and unfortunately got wait listed. Sorry for the late response! :frowning:
