stonybrook vs. buffalo

Well I am also from NYC and from my recent visit, it is very laid back in terms of pacing. For example calling a cab is not as quick as in the city. The night life prob doesn’t compare as well.

So in terms of campus spirit/life

UB > SBU?

Is this another upstate/downstate thing or a general question? There are lots of upstate, downstate, local, and first generation American/international students at UB. D’s experience as a freshman is that they mix freely and well and she has made friends with all. Buffalo is not like NYC but Western NY has it’s own charms and personality (I find it much friendlier, in general, but I suppose it’s whatever you’re used to). Most students seem involved with one or more activities at UB and D tells me that events are very well attended. She doesn’t know anyone that doesn’t like it there - other than the usual homesick, misses Mom’s cooking variety problems. There’s always something to do if you’re not studying and plenty of study groups and serious students. But it’s a big school and no one is going to hold your hand - my sense is that if you make an effort to be involved and connected, it’s a rewarding experience!

She didn’t find that the several visits she did as a senior gave her a true feeling for UB as they don’t really present all that the school has to offer in those sessions. She was somewhat overwhelmed by the size in her first week, but it became normal quickly. If you know someone who attends UB and can talk with them or do a weekend visit you might get a better idea of how it would fit your personality.

UB does exit surveys and this may give you a better idea:

Yes, Buffalo can be slow paced, but so are most areas not in a “city”.

For those looking to SB for faster pace life, you may be disappointed. I live inteh next town. Quite suburban here. You can take a train into Queens or NY City but it is not really that close and I suspect you will not go in that often.

“Suburbia” whether Buffalo or Stony Brook is not like NYC and you can’t just wave down a cabl You call and wait.

Check out both schools before making any dramatic changes. If you want a faster paced city life apply to Queens College or a CUNY if you need to keep costs down.
