Stopped attending class due to illness, got an F

A few years ago I took a few classes at Cal's summer session. I did well in the first two, but the 2nd session I got sick and stopped going to class after about a week. The drop deadline was really early and I didn't realize how sick I was until after it passed. I didn't complete any work and only showed up to 2 or 3 lectures. I got the F.

So I just retook the class and chose to take it P/NP. I just realized that a P doesn't replace an F and that F is going to hurt my GPA forever now.

Since I didn't really "fail" the class, I just got sick and withdrew extremely early, can I petition to get this taken off my transcript or at least changed to NP?

I'm an applying transfer student to several UCs and a) that F is really going to hurt my application to all of them, and b) if I go to a different UC, those grades will still be on my transcript because it's a UC wide transcript. So it's really important that I figure out a way to change this.

You should have asked your instructor to change your grade to I (Incomplete) and completed the coursework when you were well again. I don’t know if you can still do anything at this point; talk with an advisor.

…Oh my god, I’m in the EXACT SAME SITUATION. Wow.

I was told to apply for retroactive withdrawal. Berkeley is really good about weird circumstances like this; just go to the student health and provide documentation that you were sick and it took a while to learn what was wrong and explain the situation. They’ll help you with retroactive withdrawal and you’ll have a W that semester instead of an F.

Good luck! :frowning: I know it’s tough. I had an undiagnosed nerve disorder and by the end of the semester I couldn’t even sit through lecture in the stuffy room without feeling like I was going to pass out and by the time I realised I was NOT going to be okay, it was too late to withdraw.
