Stories from Telebears - Waitlisted

i am an incoming freshman currently on the waitlist for Math 53 - i think about 15th on the list. Was hoping someone could share their experiences with being waitlisted on Telebears. What do think my chances are of getting this class? If so, When would i know? Is there anything i can do to increase my odds of getting this class?

-sorry if the i's bother you. I love e.e. cummings.

Being an incoming freshman myself, I can’t speak from experience, but my CalSO counselor said if you’re in the top 30 or so of a big class like Math 53 you should be fine getting into the lecture. It’s the discussions/labs that get you, but as long as you have one picked out that has room you should be fine.

I was 6th on the waitlist for my AC class (Geog 70AC) and I got in within hours of the start of my Phase II appointment, and that class only has 100 people in it, so I wouldn’t be too worried about being 16th in line for the 500-person math lecture :)

Also, e.e. cummings is a beast.

As a junior, I’ll say: relax. You’ll be fine. There’s a 95% chance that you will be enrolled in the class.

Professors routinely expand class sizes to make sure that everybody gets off the waitlist. They will usually do everything they can to ensure that happens, including applying for a larger lecture hall, opening up more sections, or in one case, even offering to teach two “identical” lectures at different times.

I’ve gotten off waitlists of as large as 100 people. Get used to it. Assume you’re in, and maybe have a backup plan if you need the peace of mind.

Only 15th on the waitlist for Math 53? You’re likely to get in even before the class starts a month from now.
