Storing your belongings over the summer?

My son is a freshman, and UMD is a looonng way from home. Any suggestions on how/where he should store his stuff over the summer? When we moved him into his dorm, we brought along his belongings in several suitcases. Then we bought pillow, comforter, sheets, printer, shower caddy, (etc. etc.) locally. It's not all coming home, only to go back again in August. Ideas?

Since most of the kids there are from Maryland, does he have any friends (or his roommate) that he could ask to store some stuff at their house (garage, basement, etc.) ? That would be the safest and it would be free (other than a thank-you dinner or gift to their parents....)

There are self-storage places....if he knows other people who are also out of state, maybe 2 or 3 of them can go together and rent the smallest self-storage unit (but that requires transportation to get the stuff moved there). I don't know which are the most reliable, however.

I had a very kind CC'er offer to store D's bicycle and miiscellaneous stuff over last summer (her son and D had a mutual friend). D's pretty OCD about her "stuff", and she didn't want to have to decide what she wanted to bring home vs. what she wouldn't need until fall. She was moving to St. Mary's (across the street from the Stamp) this year, so she didn't want to take her bike back to campus. Bottom line, we lugged it all back home, but it's a 7-hr drive for us...certainly easier than dealing with going across the entire country. This summer, I expect that she'll be staying in College Park (how sad!!!), so she'll have to move out of her dorm/apt and into her summer place and then back again for the fall.

Good luck!!!

He might be able to store his stuff at his GF's house, or at his aunt & uncle's house. Hopefully it won't be more than a few boxes. You're right - transportation to a storage facility would be an issue.

Check this out. It's done via the Mail Boxes etc on campus store.

Summer & Winter Storage from the UPS Store at University of Maryland

Thank you qdude! It's on the expensive side, but it's a great service! I'll bookmark that site.

I’m resurrecting this thread…it looks like this summer we’ll need to get a small storage room for most of D1’s stuff and whatever D2 decides she doesn’t need for the summer. There are s a few pieces of small furniture involved (tables, file cabinets, refrigerators, etc), so the on-campus service won’t work out (they give you 4 20 x 20 x 20" boxes). Has anyone here had any experience with any of the self-storage places around campus?

If I go to UMd, I’d be about 15-20 min. from home. I never thought of that as a plus before reading this thread … :)
