I was just given the option to be waitlisted at Storrs from regular decision and I have a few questions:

1) What are the typical odds of being admitted in late May from this list? I know that admissions counselors already admit more than they can fit to account for those that opt not to enroll...so any idea of how much space really opens up in late May?

2) What can you do to legitimately increase your chances of being admitted in late May, if anything?

3) Is it worth the risk? I'd be turning down Penn State University Park and Rutgers, among others with a May 1st deposit deadline. However, I would still have the option of attending West Virginia if I didn't get into UConn from the waiting list.

UConn and Penn State are my top 2 choices. I've waited for 3 months now and am very disappointed.

Any advice on my options would be greatly appreciated. Wish I had discovered the UConn Journalism department earlier and applied sooner.

You must still accept one of your schools by May 1st–Don’t wait for UConn…Sounds like it should be Penn State. If you get in off the waitlist you will simply forfeit your deposit to Penn State and accept UConn. It’s not a big deposit. Don’t be foolish.

I’m going to see if I can find out how high I’m “ranked” on the waiting list, but if it helps for anyone that can chance my odds on the wait list, my basic stats right now are a 3.5 GPA and 1140/1810 SAT.

Good idea, cal. I think it’s a 300 dollar deposit at PSU.

So maybe I can just commit to University Park for now, and if later I get accepted to UConn and really want to go after a visit, I’ll just have to pay a little extra deposit money for college.

I’ll talk to my guidance counselor tomorrow about my options. Thanks.

Most state schools have been flooded with applications. Your GPA is good, but your SAT’s are in the low range to get accepted. I assume that you are OOS?? Why not write a note to your admissions advisor expressing you desire to attend.

Should I email my letter of interest in the same response I give accepting the waiting list offer, or send a separate formal letter in the mail to the admissions office?

My son really wanted to go to University of Wisconsin, he applied Early Action and was deferred. He wrote a letter expressing that UW was one of his top choices. He was accepted and plans to go. I suggest writing a letter directly to the admission person and express your desire to attend. My son was accepted to Smeal EA. I realize that its more exciting to attend a state school other then your own home state. Uconn is not better then Penn state, your costs are higher at uconn. My daughter attends Uconn, she wanted to go out of state, but she didn’t receive any money from the other schools. If you were from Connecticut you would have a problem getting into University Place. Penn State is a lot cheaper for you, if you were my son I would suggest that you go to Penn state and save the money for graduate school.

i know this was posted a couple years ago but i have the exact same gpa and sat scores as you… i was just wondering were you admitted after being put on the waiting list?
