Story-style essay

My main essay that I'm using for all of my colleges is in a story-style. I am working on scientific research at 5 am, get a huge accomplishment, and figure out that this feeling of satisfaction after so much work is what had kept me going for the 14 straight hours I worked that day. I then go into a thinking-mood, and talk about how my interest in science developed, as well as some more evidence of it. Finally, I realize that this is passion and have an epiphany as to what has driven me so far.

My parents think that the story-ness takes away from the essay, as it doesn't get to the point right away. I set the scene: I'm working late at night, hunched over my laptop, typing away, my mom tells me to sleep and I really want to, but I can't until I figure this out, etc. Is this true?

storylike is acceptable. Fairy tale and/or making yourself seem in the biggest hardship and finally making it out of the hard struggle only to grasp the most air you can until you collapse is not acceptable.
