During high school, I drank heavily and dropped tons of acid, finished coursework in minimal time with minimal effort, derived quantum physics results in my head, and worked on a proposal for development economics that will certainly win me the Nobel Peace Prize.

All while training 12 hours a day for an Ironman, and curing cancer.

As for reality, I partied a lot, was a competitive athlete and ran a couple of organizations while maintaining a good IB point total (43/45), so yes, it's possible.

Definitely possible!
A lot of it, I believe, depends on the following though..

I had a crazy hard schedule my junior year, 5 AP's, 1 honors, 1 regular. I got a 5 on four of my exams, and a 4 on one of them, so I did learn the information.

I also had a social life; albeit it didn't mean I was going out every day and partying it up, but I still socialized with every single one of my friends, and went out on the weekends.

It really is about time management, you need to learn how to budget your time or else you'll be swamped with 1 AP, let alone 5.
