Straight As this fall

Which leaves me with a 4.0 in my major (PoliSci), and (after properly figuring it the UC way) a 3.76 for my time at the CC. They have consistently got better, with nothing less than a B, and at least 3 A's to every B each semester. However, this doesn't figure in the incomplete that lapsed to an F six years ago during a summer session UCSC class (open enrollment). If I explained all that in my personal statement, what do you think about my chances for Berkeley and UCLA? I had posted another thread about this a while back, but I had incorrectly calculated my GPA, and also didn't know my grades.

So what do you think? With that F, it lowers my overall GPA, but it was so long ago, and considering the circumstances. How much weight do they put on grade trends? On major GPA?

you’ll be fine, grade trends are taken into account as is major GPA (they are both weighed fairly heavily). 6 years is a long time ago and you’re grades indicate that you’ve changed (academically speaking).

That gives me some hope, thanks for the reply man.

You’ll be fine. A 4.0 for this fall semester and a 3.76 cumulative will have way more weight than an F six years ago. Hopefully you also have all prereqs for your down, as UCLA puts a lot of emphasis on completion especially for a competitive major like yours.

I had 2 F’s and 1 D in CCC only 2 years ago and got into Cal. Granted, I received Academic Renewal, but I think the most important point to take note of is your grade trend, as CalBearGuy pointed out. Your grade trend is overwhelmingly positive.

Wait. Why don’t you just get Academic Renewal?? You could probably get that F taken out of your GPA. Each CCC has a different AR policy, but as long as you have ~3.5+ GPA since, you can likely get that F out of your GPA…esp since it was 6 years ago!

My prereqs/ IGETC will be done this spring, with 62 units completed, so I’m good there. Major prereqs are done now. As far as Academic Renewal, if that means what I think it does (taking the same class again?) I can’t do it. You see, this class was at UCSC; it was a summer course anyone could sign up for. It was an obscure anthro class called “Anthropology of Drugs” and they inform me they’ll never offer it again.

Only good things going for me with it are: I think the transcript from UCSC notes that it was an “Incomplete” that lapsed to an F, my W’s and a couple NCs from the CCC during the same period (FA 04/ SP 05), and my explanation in my personal statement of the addiction/ alcoholism I was facing at the time. If anything, the nature of the course speaks to that problem, but my work these last few years, both on my sobriety and school, is reflected in my grades. I realize that an addiction might not be viewed as the same sort of “obstacle” as another illness, such as cancer, so it will be interesting to see how the admissions app reviewers treat my case.
