Strange Application... What do you think?

Recently I tried to re-apply to UCLA's graduate EE program (I applied to the program last year but was not admitted); after contacting to their graduate admission coordinator, I learned that either you have to submit a completely new application or the old one that you completed last year. Basically it is an 'all or nothing' app.

What's strange is that if one were to submit a new app, then it requires 3 completely new LoRs (I am quite annoyed by that...). On the other hand, if I were to keep the same old app, then I cannot update my app with new information (eg. new personal statement, transcripts, etc).

Has anyone had such experience? What is your take-on?

This is pretty much standard practice, I think. Just ask for new LORs and submit a new app.

That’s standard practice? But why? Seems odd.

Do you mean you need 3 LORs from completely different people, or 3 newly-written LORs from the same people? If it’s the latter, then yeah, that sounds like standard practice. Plus they might be able to address why you would be a better candidate this year (how you’ve grown, etc) compared to last year.

^
Yeah, that.

I dont think the admission office care whether 3 LoRs are from different individuals or the same ones, so long as there are 3 of them.

I am inclined to submit a new one, but asking the recommenders for LoRs is going to another headache…

Oh okay. I thought it was 3 different people… which made NO sense. ^ Makes sense (albeit it is a pain, but if your application wasn’t fruitful the first time, it makes even more sense… )
