You may or may not believe this, but I certainly noticed a difference when I tried it.

Bite your tongue when you read. (Not hard, just rest it in between your two sets of teeth)

Why? We're all taught to pronounce words vocally when we learn how to read, which many people agree is a horrible method because it limits our ability to read quickly- we read only as fast as we feel comfortable speaking the words. If you mutter words when you read or notice your tongue moving as you read, you might notice some improvement by not permitting yourself to "speak" the words and instead letting your mind do the work. Call it crazy but I noticed a difference the first time I tried it, and have since broken the habit of "speak-reading" in little more than a week.

Don't expect to read 3 times as fast, but you might notice some improvement.

i tried it reading the paragraph you wrote, and yes, it works IF the normal way you read is by pronouncing out the words. i dont do that anyway so it would have no effect for me, but nice tip for kids who normally do that.

another tip for already advanced readers: when you read you probably speak the words in your MIND. well try not even speaking them in your mind and just reading them with your eyes and processing automatically.

This is how I normally read. No one can understand how I can read a paragraph in the time it takes them to read a sentence, or have me read a page in the time it takes them to read a paragraph.

how can u read without saying the words in ur mind?? thats wut I do, and I cant imagine how u can just see the words and then process it, how does that work??? probably I cant imagine it, cos I simply cant do it... r u saying u just look at the words, without thinking???

yes, just try looking at groups of words (NOT individual ones) when youre reading and dont say them in your mind...eventually you will get the hang of it and be a speeddemon. i dont recommend this for reading stuff like math textbooks of course, and i usually read like Figgy because I enjoy the words, but when i just need the material this is what i do.

for example, you know when you're really engrossed in a book (like the end of Harry Potter novels) the pages just fly by and you dont even realize youre reading...this is how youre doing it (i think).

Ya I can do it, I just don't want to when I read books for assignments because I need to know and have thought about the material...and I don't when I read for fun (unless it's like he said w/ the Harry Potter thing) because I'm reading for fun...not for speed lol. o well that's my excuse lol

I find that I can kind of do the thing with reading in groups or biting the tongue, and I'm sure I could master it. My CR score is really high though so it isn't really anything that would interest me . . . unless I needed to speed-read for something. That's a different matter entirely. Good CR tips, though.

Yeah I skim stuff like Harry Potter, but not history books because I really need to absorb the information and not just know it temporarily. In this case, for the SAT passages, this strategy is great and almost forces you to read fast and finish the sections in the alotted amount of time. Good advise!
