Strange question, I suppose.

I'm currently a Junior in Highschool and am looking for colleges I may be interested in applying for. Right now I have fairly long hair (It drops a bit below my neck) however it is by no means messy looking or anything of that nature. I was wondering if I would be forced to get a hair cut if I was accepted to west point and if so, how severe it would have to be. Thanks for any help.

female or male?

Ah, sorry male.

yeah its getting cut lol. look up AR 670-1 on google and look inside it for the regulation on hair

Ah, that's discouraging :( .

So basically they force you to get a bland military cut? No exceptions? That ruins my night X_X.

At WP they will give you a lot more to worry about than your hair!

Im sure that getting your hair shaved would be a blessing come basic...

Denalli - assuming your question was serious to begin with perhaps you should take a good look at what you want out of college. Attending a service academy is a commitment to your country, and to a disciplined way of life.

it really helps to cut your hair cuz it gets really annoying while you run and stuff. I had my hair about that long too and I got over rather quickly.

Out of curiosity, what are some of the reason you want to go?

I know thats an abstract question since most people here could go on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on about why they want to go, but maybe list a few major points?

Honestly, I don't have a reason to want to go to Westpoint specifically, as of now. Few people from my family have ever made it to college, much less one as prestigous as Westpoint so I never presumed I had a shot to get a chance to go to anything better than our state college (Louisiana). After talking with my guidance counseler and teachers, they informed me that my test scores and extracurricular activities may allow me to get into a more beneficial school and so now I'm attempting to research what schools I may be interested in.

I wasn't saying that I wasn't going to go if I had to cut my hair, I was simply trying to clarify the issue. I had seen that women were allowed to wear there hair long and thought that perhaps they had altered some rules to allow men to wair their own hair a bit longer. It would be a bit of a shock to walk in on the first day and them tell me I'd have to shave all my hair off, so it's nice to know.

If I may, I'd like to use this thread to ask a another question.

I'm in pretty good shape and stuff, however; I'm an absolute rock in the water. I saw that on the test required for applications there is no swimming. So I was wondering, do they require you to swim well or often?

Thanks for all the help, it is most definately appreciated.

Does anyone know if they require a full shave on R-day? You dont have to have a shaved head in the military. A female is allowed to have hair down to the top of her shoulders or put it up in a bun with a diameter of no more than three inches, and it can't interfere with headgear.

In one foreign army... soldiers are authorized a military mullet hehe

Denalli,

There is an awful lot of information on the usma.edu web site that you will want to review. If you look around you will find videos and photographs of R-Day (including the haircuts). You'll also find a lot about Beast. If you haven't done so yet, you may want to request info from Admissions. Finally, if you're a junior, you should try to apply to SLS which is a 1-week West Point program for rising high school seniors. It would be a great way to see if this is a lifestyle you could want to live.

Good luck!

"Few people from my family have ever made it to college, much less one as prestigous as Westpoint so I never presumed I had a shot to get a chance to go to anything better than our state college (Louisiana)."
That means almost nothing. Just because people in your family never got into college doesnt mean you cant get into somewhere like MIT or Yale and skill kick ass there.

Either im sure everyone here wishes you the best of luck with everything, where ever you go!

We could have asked for a little off the sides, but they gave us all the same haircut. A short buzz. Girls are different...I dunno about that.

if you're a male they shave your head. if thats a big hang up, then maybe westpoint isn't the best choice cuz its like a jail. a prestigious jail.

life would be so much easier without having to worry about my hair :) i wonder if id use shampoo or just soap... hmmm...

when i went to basic they shaved this girls head cus she dyed it before she came. lol funniest thing ever

Girls actually aren't ALLOWED to shave their heads at West Point. The rule for girl's hair is that it can't touch the bottom of the collar.
