Strange Request by UCI

Hello everyone, I’m brand new to these boards and wanted to get an opinion. I recently checked my message center at the UCI admissions site and the admissions counselor had sent me this message:

"In order to determine your admission status, we need the following
documents. Please submit this information as soon as possible.

This is my first request regarding this information.

Information requested below can be faxed or sent to me by reply
to this message. If you are admitted and decide to attend UCI,
official documentation may be required.

The Chemical Engineering major requirs a course in Electricity and
Magnetism (Phys lC). Please let me know if you plan to take
this course in the summer or if you would prefer to be switched to an
Engineering major that does not require this. Civil Engineering
would work.

If we do not hear from you within three weeks of the above date, your
application may be canceled.

If your plans have changed, and you have decided not to attend UCI, please
notify me in writing immediately.

Please reply to this message if you have any questions.

Thank you."

Now, I don’t know whether or not that class will be offered this summer or not and I’m not taking it this Spring because I felt that I should complete the Chemistry requirements completely. So I messaged them back saying so and that I will find out ASAP if the course will be offered.

The admissions counselor then sent me this message:

“I can put you into Civil Engineering if you
cannot take Physics lC prior to admission.
Please advise.”

The reason I think this is an odd request is because there are several classes for Civil Engineering that I have not taken. On assist.org there are about 4-5 classes (Geology, Engineering, etc.) that are said to be transfer requirements. However, for Chemical Engineering the only requirement I’m missing is that Physics class.

Do you think they’re just trying to get more Civil Engineering majors? If I cannot take the Physics course before transferring, should I switch to Civil Engineering? I mean, I did consider this major for a little while but I feel that at this point there are so many classes I am way behind on taking. Also, I applied to UCSD, UCLA, and UCB and I’m waiting on those decisions as well. Another opinion on this would be great. Thanks.

Yeah, I'd do whatever it takes to get in. Tell them that you'll take whatever course they want in the summer.

^ a lot of schools , especially community colleges , do not offer physics in the summer ... those are usually 5 unit physics courses, none of the community collegs in my area offer them... and i check 5 diffrent ones, ....

i think what they are asking of you is weird, if you are missing only 1 class, versus missing about 4 for the other major/ what is the logic in that??????????????

I don't think it's that weird; it appears that they have more space in civil engineering. If you are put up against others for chemical engineering, you fall short without that class, but in civil engineering your stats stand up to the pool.

If you have to drive 10-20 miles to another college to get that physics class, then do it. If you must take it extension at a university, do it.

Thanks for all the replies. I told them I will take the course for sure this summer. Hopefully everything works out.
