Strange situation

I'm a community college student, about to transfer to UCSD ...or at least I was. I had signed a housing contract, enrolled in classes, and was ready to go off to school at the end of this month. I'm starting to realize that not only may I have made the wrong choice, but that I lack focus or any sort of a plan. I would be in over my head in debt and decided it might be best just to bone out and reapply to schools next year.

This leads me to my question: How would my chances be for admission to schools if I take a year off? My grades have been okay (3.5ish) and I am IGETC certified. I might be at a disadvantage though. I applied to a TON of schools and I was accepted to all of them. Naturally, as lazy as I am, I didn't have the courtesy to decline my acceptance offers. Will this affect my chances? I most likely will decide to go with UCLA or Cal, but I did kind of blow them off.

If it makes any difference I might add that I was accepted to all schools as a communication major with the exception of UCLA; I was admitted to their film school. I think I will be reapplying as a business major next year.

So, basically, the question is: What are my chances of being accepted to these schools after blowing them off and then taking a year off? And: Is the application process going to be the same? If so, can I reuse essays?

I don’t think it will matter if you reapply next year. I don’t understand about the debt thing. It doesn’t matter if you start this year or next year, you’re still going to owe the same, right? Unless you’re thinking of working full time.

no offense, but ***… you got into Cal and UCLA’s super competitive film major, chose UCSD, then changed your mind? Is this for real? And yeah school’s not getting any cheaper as mermaker said. Part of me thinks this is a joke, but if it isn’t you have a big decision ahead of you. Do you not like UCSD? Why did you choose it in the first place?

Based on what you said, it sounds like you can’t decide what you want to major in. Are you sure that Business is actually what you want to do this time? I think you need to give more information for anyone to help you, but it’s going to come down to what you want to do.

Btw, the word that got bleeped out was ftw backwards.

I don’t understand your situation. Why did you chose UCSD in the first place if you knew UCLA would probably have been a more interesting environment for you? What led you to chose UCSD? There must have been a reason.

I think you are OVERREACTING big time. You probably think that you need to go to UCLA or Cal to get a great degree - in communications, or film. But honestly - if you graduate as a University of California student, you will have wonderful opportunities for grad school and/or professional schools because of the research and theoretical background as an undergrad.

I really suggest you don’t go back to community college. School hasn’t even started yet at UCSD and you’re saying this!?? Why waste another year when you have the university experience in front of you already?

P.S. Business Economics and Business Administration at UCLA/Cal require heavy prerequisites that may not be finished in one year. You can always minor in Economics at UC San Diego. UCSD has many opportunities that you may not be aware of.

I agree with everyone on here. Man the hell up and do what you have to do. You really want to be that guy? The guy that didn’t go to UCSD because he was scared and lazy?

I won’t criticize you, but there are a few important things to note. First, being accepted again to UCLA and UCB and being accepted to their respective business programs are two totally different things. I don’t think you’ll be at a disadvantage because you didn’t decline your offers of acceptance; the schools are too big to notice you, frankly. What might be a problem though, as ocnative mentioned, is completing the pre-reqs required for each business program. I think you can finish them in a year of school, but at the time of application–a couple months from now–you’ll have completed either none or very few. Moreover, you’ll have to come up with a valid explanation as to why you decided to switch to business, and it’ll have to be compelling, really compelling. Lastly, your gpa will definitely be problematic for both programs; UCLA’s average admitted gpa to BizEcon for Fall 2012 was a 3.92.

If you don’t mind me asking, why do you want to switch from comm and film to business?

Thanks guys. I really am unsure of what I want to do, ad most of all, scared for the future. This is why I decided against film school. I got scared that I would graduate with now career opportunities. This is why I think I would like to stick with business, but unfortunately UCSD does not have an undergrad business program to speak of. I think I may follow through with UCSD since I have come this far already, but do you guys have any suggestions for classes to take this semester that would open some new doors for me to develop some sort of direction for my educational career. Or maybe some business related courses?

Also, Most classes are waitlisted right now and I’d need to be registered in 12 units to live on campus. What are the chances of getting into a class with a capacity of 70ish as number 10 on the waitlist? Also do waitlisted courses count toward the 12 unit minimum or do I have to be enrolled now?

And to OCnative, what sort of opportunities do you speak of?

UCSD has better minors than Cal and UCLA. Especially, if you’re interested in either Economics, Business, Psychology, Political Science or Computer Science. They don’t offer those minors at UCLA or Cal (especially UCLA, since everything is mostly restricted).

[Undergraduate Minor Codes](Undergraduate Minor Codes)

So - since you’re going to UCSD as a Communication major, you can minor in Business ([Rady School: Undergrad Business Minor](http://rady.ucsd.edu/undergrad/business-minor/)) as well.

Do you think another major at UCSD would work better for finding my way to a business related career or grad school?

Or would I really be better off going to SDSU for that?

I guess…but you really just want to go to SDSU for Business? That’s pretty lame for your undergrad and I know CSU’s aren’t as noteworthy on preparing you for grad schools as the UC’s are. Some may argue but at the end the UC’s research and theoretical approach is more valued than the hands-on approach for grad school.

Also, Economics is a good business related major. You can minor in that at UCSD - you CAN’T minor in that at Cal or UCLA.
