Strategy Question

Hi! I'm now a senior, and I'm looking to apply to top schools like Penn, Yale, Columbia, Northwestern, etc.

My SAT score is 2340: 800 V 740 M 800 W
My SAT subject scores are: 770 Lit 760 US 740 Math II

My question is, which should I retake: the SAT to raise math or SAT subject test to raise math II?

I'm not at all disappointed in my two 740s. But I have one more testing date at my disposal, and my school encourages me to take advantage of that.

So which is more important to raise: SAT or third SAT subject test?

Thanks!

neitherrrrrrrr

But…I have to test one more time. My school practically requires us to!

A 740 in Math Level 2 doesn’t really represent that you have any type of superior skill. The curve is too generous. I got a 780 somehow, and I am retaking that for an 800. I would take that if i were you since an 800 is a low percentile.

I agree. Although it sounds high, a 740 in Math II is a low percentile. My only argument against that is that most schools only look at the applicant’s best two SAT subject test scores, so my Math II–in most cases–would become irrelevant.

Do you agree?

And isn’t the SAT technically more important?

A 2340 for the SAT is superb.
Also, for the SAT, I feel that the English sections, and specifically the essay, are more liable to variation and you might not score the two 800s again.

Definitely retake the SATI if you know you can raise the math. Despite what you’re being told here being above the median in everything counts at those schools and a 740 math is below median at Yale and probably Columbia.

Most will just count the top 2 SATIIs.

Thanks, all! Kind of a tough call…

Does anyone have any other insight?

And hmom, what is the math median in those schools?

My initial advice would be not to take any more tests, you’re fine. If you absolutely want/need to do another sitting, my advice would be not to retake any, but instead to take a science Subject test.

Your scores are beautiful, congratulations! Go ahead and re-take if you are being “forced”. It does make it easier for the school to go to bat for you “He’s got a perfect score…” blah, blah and brag about you. However, that being said, top schools turn down a gazillion perfect and near perfect scores. So make sure you give yourself plenty of options, nice schools like Duke, Georgetown, Notre Dame are benefiting from the population bubble of brilliant kids.

Thank you  And Duke and Georgetown are both on my list.

Well 740 definitely falls into the middle 50% for schools like Yale, so I don’t think it really is an issue there. If you had to retake, you should retake the SAT II Math – it’s only 1 hour long. Time aside, a 740 on Math II, IMHO, looks worse than a 740 on SAT I Math. I know plenty of people (most of them matriculating at the top schools) who scored below a 750 on SAT I math and yet still easily scored an 800 on Math II.

Ugh I know, I got 780-800s on my practice tests. But I’m actually not very good at math, so the 740 didn’t surprise me that much.
