Strength of class effecting chances?

So my school is a decent public school that sends like 5 kids to Cornell each year and like 2 other kids that go to “top 10” colleges. However, my year there are like 10 strong kids in my grade that are strong candidates for the Ivy League. They also have connections like legacies, and 3 of them are URMS. TRADITIONALLY SINCE CORNELL ONLY TAKES AROUND 5 from my school each year, will the strength of my class effect my chance of getting into Ivy League schools? Do colleges do school profiling where they say ok, we only take 5 kids from this school, or do they accept only based on the strength if the applicant?

Does Cornell take exactly 5 every year from your school?

Pretty much. They took 5 last year and the year before that

Wow 2 years proves a lot man - maybe for the next century they will only choose 5. You better work hard

NO, sometimes they’ll take 6 or 7, sometimes they’ll take 1 or 2, sometimes they’ll take none. If as you say the class is exceptionally strong, the admit numbers will reflect that. (I’m assuming you’re a feeder school because having 5 admits consistently is quite good). However, remember there are LOTS of factors that come into play and any school with admit rates below 30% is an automatic reach (ie., never count on it.)

Yea, thanks, I think your right because one year they accepted 12 from our school and another year just 3 (just looking at naviance). I just wanted some reassurance.

First of all, it is affect* not effect.

No, they do not only take a certain percentage from a school each year. They take who they want to take. You’re in a huge pool of applicants that are not divided up by high school. Maybe there are people who have better GPA’s than you, but so what? Go to Cornell with them! My biggest piece of advice is to stand out. Put your classes and GPA on hold for a minute and focus on you. What defines you? Make something of yourself and become a leader. Start your own club (and make it a success), start your own community service program, get a job (you should already have one, but if you don’t, get on that fast). College isn’t all about grades, so please have a great resume!

PS- I’m a freshman at UNC Chapel Hill.

you’re*

@RKD890223 You just replied to my thread 13 hours ago saying that you go to Miami of Ohio. Not dissing, just questioning your credibility…

Sorry-- apparently I offended someone haha. I am in the process of transferring to Chapel Hill right now and have already gotten in. I got in last year and decided not to go, but am realizing now that I will be happier there. Clearing things up for the random stranger that is stalking me.

@RKD89023 Nobody is offended. I was actually going to PM you for some questions until I saw you stating that you go to Miami and UNC at the same time. Kudos on Chapel Hill.
