strengths of Umich

hey folks.

i've been accepted into Umich for engineering. however, i just got rejected by Berkeley, my dream school, so i kinda feel a little discouraged.

Don't get me wrong, i know the Umich is an awesome school and am looking forward for the experience of studying there.

perhaps someone could say something good about Umich to get me excited?

Hey! First off, sorry about Cal. As a loyal Cal fan for my entire life, I totally know why people consider it a "dream school." It's the complete package.

However, you know what? I'm seriously considering turning down Cal for Michigan. I was admitted to both, and I'm in-state for Cal, so I wouldn't do it if I didn't think it was worth every extra penny.

Both, you will be pleasantly surprised to find, are incredibly similar to each other. In fact, upon visiting Ann Arbor, the first thing I said to my brother, a junior at Cal, was "wow, Cal and Michigan are SO similar!" The only difference really is about 50 degrees colder in the winter, and a slightly bigger athletic scene at Michigan. The towns are both really cool, and Ann Arbor is probably a little cleaner, which is a good thing. Plus, Ann Arbor is very, very safe!!! Berkeley, while not unsafe, probably can't be trusted in the same way AA can. Both campuses are large, and I find both equally attractive. Both towns are liberal, though AA doesn't have any tree-sitters yet, which is probably why their football team is better :P

Berkeley is ranked as the #1 public university in the US, Michigan is ranked #2.

Michigan also has THE BEST alumni base in the world; the most distant alumni chapter is on the moon (courtesy of Apollo 15, an all U-M crew), and I've never seen a school collectively be so thrilled about what they are representing.

You will love Michigan. I'm not sure if I will be attending due to some financial restraints, but I honestly believe it is one of the true gems in higher education. Last year, USNWR ranked it as one of the 25 "New Ivies." Go Blue!

vc08, amen to the Apollo 15.
i had the luxury of visiting Kennedy space centre and a small group of us had lunch with Al Worden.
a truly cool guy with wonderful insights to the moon and really witty too...

but surely there are other plus points of studing in Umich, like perhaps the life outside the classroom? afterall, many say our time studying in college is our last chance to enjoy ourselves before life gets serious...

haha that's why I mentioned Ann Arbor and the sports theme. If you're bored with Michigan, you're bored with life.

University of Michigan Student Organizations - Maize Pages

Just take a minute and scroll down....

ive heard Michigan has a pretty crazy party scene if thats what you wanted to know

i just want to challenge one thing that was said...michigan as the number 2 public university in the nation...i think it's UVa.

Michigan and UVA are tied for 2nd although both schools like to leave that tidbit out lol

Actually, Michigan is 3rd w/ UCLA.

On the US News which I checked b4 posting that it says two.

Whoops outdated edition you are right Globalist

ohh God does it really matter???

Harvard is 2 behind Princeton. But honestly, which school is the "landmark" of higher education?

At the undergraduate level, I would say that Cal, Michigan and UVa are all roughly equal and considered the top 3 publics. UCLA, UNC and Wisconsin aren't far behind.

^ And for grad? :)

actually UCLA, UM, UVA, CAL are all top tier public institutions

For grad? hehe! I thought we were discussing undergrad. Well, for grad, I would give Cal the clear edge in the Sciences and the slight edge in Engineering and Economics. Cal and Michigan are roughly even in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Professional programs. Overall, I would say Cal's graduate programs are #1 or #2 in the US, Michigan's are probably around #5 or #6.

ElTacoGrande, at that level, it is very hard to differentiate between #1 and #9. Cal, Michigan, Texas, UCLA, UIUC, UNC, UVa, W&M and Wisconsin are all awesome. Personally, for undergraduate education, I believe if one had to pick the top 3, they would be Cal, Michigan and UVa.

in other words, Umich is up there with the best.
how the campus life? i heard the central campus is really happening. not sure about the north or south campus though..

South campus is strictly for athletics and maintenance. North campus is is not as "active" as central campus, but has frequent and free bus service between the two. Personally, i would recommend living on central campus/hill area if at all possible.

Well, bus service is frequent on weekdays (once every five minutes). On weekends, not so much (once every 20 minutes). Hopefully, the University improves weekend bus service, but I wouldn't count on it.

That isn't to say that North Campus has no advantages over Central. For instance, the Duderstadt Center beat the pants off the UGLi as a studying place, in my opinion.

I stand corrected on the weekend bus service.
