stressed about registration!

hi again.....
ok i've already watched the registration video, looked at those websites ppl posted on my other thread and also got an email from my advisor and looked at the websites she recommended but i am still confused

so we pre-register, so thats 11credits so about three classes? so we only need to choose three courses and one of those have to be freshmen seminar?

so I choose one course for freshmen seminar from this list ...

right? so thats already one course out of three courses?

and the 2 other courses have to be GER? and what courses are GER?
what is ger 1,2,3,4,5,6,7? is on of them counted as 1 course? like if i take ger 1 and 7 thats two courses?

so 1 freshmen seminar and two ger courses and thats all i have to choose?

but is tat really all that seems so little for college even if i am going to have about two more courses in orientation ?

omg i am so confused.....and i feel so dumb..help me plz..

You have to take a freshman seminar at some point during your freshman year. It is advisable to try to register for one of these during the fall, as the selection is greater, but if it doesn’t work out there are still some in the spring too. Freshman seminars usually run 4 credits.

GERs are General Education Requirements. You have to complete all of the GERs in order to graduate. None of the courses you take this semester HAVE to be GERs. There are no specific requirements as to when you must take them, only that you must complete them all before graduating so it is advisable not to put them off. See the Course Catalog on the Registrar’s website for all the details regarding the GERs you must take to graduate: [William & Mary -*Office of the University Registrar](University Registrar | William & Mary) If I recall correctly, the breakdown is:
GER 1: Math/Quantitative. One course.
GER 2A, 2B, 2L: Science. One physical science course (2A), and one biological science course (2B). One of these two courses must be taken with the associated lab.
GER 3: Social science. Two courses.
GER 4A, 4B, 4A/B/C: History. One course in the European tradition (4A), one course outside the European tradition (4B), and one course either inside or outside the European tradition or cross-cultural (4C).
GER 5: Literature and History of the Arts. One course.
GER 6: Creative/Performing Arts. Two CREDITS.
GER 7: Philosophy/Religion. One course.

Courses that fulfill GERs are noted as such in Banner (as well as in the Course Catalog). Look all the way on the right side of the page, under the Attributes column. You can also use the search to locate courses that fulfill GERs.

If you register for a Freshman Seminar, this leaves you with up to 7 more credits for pre-registration (and ultimately you’ll end up with around 13-15 total once you arrive on campus). You can take GERs, courses in your intended major, or courses that just seem interesting. While it’s a good idea to get GERs out of the way, you should also start taking intro-level courses in your intended major. Upper-level courses often have these intro courses as prerequisites. Finally, college is about exploring a little bit too. Many people change their major (repeatedly). It can be worthwhile to take a class just because it sounds interesting… who knows, you might discover what you really want to do.

That’s why I recommend a Freshman Seminar, 1 GER, 1 intro-level course in your major, and 1 course just because it sounds interesting. This gets you on track to fulfill your requirements, and also gives you some room to explore. This is more than 11 credits, so you will most likely have to pick 3 courses for pre-registration and add a 4th or 5th when you get to campus.

you do not HAVE to take a freshmen seminar first semester… you can take it second semester. There are more options to choose from first semester though.

you do not HAVE to take GER classes, but it is a good idea to start on them. There are about 10 classes worth of GERs that you need to take before you can graduate. You should be able to search classes by GER on one of the drop down menus on banner where you are looking for classes to add. The GERs are:

GER 1 - Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning (1 course)
GER 2 - Natural Sciences (either 2A or 2B must include a lab, ie: chem lab, bio lab)
— 2A - Physical Science (1 course)
— 2B - Natural Science (1 course)
GER 3 - Social Sciences (2 courses)
GER 4 - World Cultures and History (3 courses, 1 European, 1 non European, and one more, either European or non European or Cross Cultural Issues)
GER 5 - Literature and History of the Arts (1 course)
GER 6 - Creative and Performing Arts (2 credits in the same topic)
GER 7 - Philosophy/Religion/Social Thought (1 course)

so, as you can see, that is 10 classes, plus GER 6 (which could be 2 semesters of private lessons, 2 semesters of group piano, 1 course in public speaking, etc)

The reason why you can only sign up for 11 credits now, is because before you sign up for more, you will have to talk to your advisor (everyone is assigned someone) when you arrive on campus. This way you can get any questions answered that you need.

most students take 4-6 classes a semester. You will have A LOT more free time than in high school.

I also recommend you take a seminar, a GER class of your choice that fits nicely in your schedule, an intro level class in what you think you want to major in, and a 4th class of your choice (and a 5th one of your choice if you want)

for your 4th/5th classes, you could take a second GER, another course in your major, something that looks interesting, or whatever you want.

Deep breath time, preauxlife :). You really will be fine. You’ve put up several threads about this, but remember that every W & M student has managed to navigate registering for the first time. It will be much easier for next semester.

You’ve gotten great specific advice from javabytes and soccerguy above. As they point out, there are online resources for figuring out the GER thing. You can also email your adviser with questions about how to fulfill specific GERs.

And even if you’re not happy with the initial results, your faculty adviser can give you a lot of help during your meeting with him/her before the second registration period. You can also always request an overide if you haven’t found a spot in a class you want.

javabytes has given you a good plan here -

Good luck - let us know how it goes!

Remember, rarely do the initial courses you register for end up being your final courses for the semester. You’ll have a chance to finish registration during Orientation and you’ll also have the opportunity to add courses and/or drop classes during add/drop (approximately the first ten days of class).

It’s advisable to start on some GERs and get a freshman seminar if you can but as already mentioned, these aren’t requirements. If you see an elective course you’re interested in (i.e. one that’s not a GER or might not be in your field of interest), go ahead and register for it. That’s the beauty of liberal arts. Or, take a class from your potential major to see if you like the department.

Keep in mind that classes can fulfill multiple requirements so if a course fulfills a GER and can count towards your major you can kill two birds with one stone. Also, feel free to call Academic Advising (757-221-2476) if you have questions about what to take or the Registrar (757-221-2800) if you’re having trouble actually registering.

Other than GERs…how do I which ones I can take? for example, there must be courses for upper classmen and not freshmen…so how will I know which courses the freshmen can take that are not freshmen seminars and GERs??

are these all the GERs out of so many the ones I need to complete 2 graduate?

The only courses you can’t take are those with prerequisites you haven’t taken. These should be listed for each course on banner and in the course catalog.

The easiest way to look for GER courses is through Banner. Under “lookup classes to add” go to the box that says attribute type. Select everything from GE1 to GE7, then click class search. It will show you all the GER classes.

Do you know what you want to major in? If so, you should probably look at the intro classes for that subject.

you can take any course that has space in it, assuming you meet the prerequisites. The prereqs for each class are listed in the course catalog.

I listed all the GER subjects… there are a fairly wide variety of courses to choose from to satisfy each requirement. Malvenuto explained the best way to see which GER courses are offered for the fall semester.
