College is proving to be very challenging, to the point where I LITERALLY spend 95-99% of my time studying and doing papers. I am really having a hard time...I feel like every sub 80 grade is going to kill me and make me poor when I get older...and as you can imagine this provokes great anxiety in me. I spend so much time studying, sometimes I wonder why sometimes I will get a grade below a 90...I just don't get it...I dont spend any time going out, hanging out etc...i dont drink/smoke/party, and what KILLS me even more is the thought the kids who dont even study as much as I do and drink/partyget higher grades. I can't deal with the competition of being the best anymore. All of my time is spent on school and eating/sleeping. I feel very down, sometimes I even feel like ending it all. I am really depressed and my stress level about school is at an extreme level (one time I even had a panic attack). My school is not even that competitive. I need advice. I am a biochemistry major.

Dude, chill out. Try your best and everything should fall into place.

don't worry so much about college...

a 'B' in college doesn't mean your life is over...
relax, have some good time... don't just study~
this is what happens to people who study ALL THE TIME IN COLLEGE

WORKING TOO HARD IN COLLEGE --> >-( ><" 00 0_o

I am putting 100% into my schoolwork, I guess I am just dissappointed I am not getting as much as I put out...

Go directly to campus counseling. You are one of many overstressed students right now and they are experts in helping you at this time of year. Your almost panic attack is your body telling you that you need to fix this right now. Your thoughts of ending it all are telling you that you need to decompress immediately. Go to counseling. These are temporary symptoms that can be easily fixed with help from adults who can see you and your stress clearly.

sometimes, its not ALL about how much you put in. I put in a decent amount of time into studying, and sometimes i get lucky on exams when things i studied in depth come up, sometimes i don't and get lower scores. It'll take some time before we can fine tune our study habits. Just chill out, its your first semester in college. This won't have much an impact on your life (as long as you don't flunk out). btw, biochem is a hard major. Im guessing you're premed. There are tons of premeds in these majors and my best advise to you is don't compare yourself with what other people are doing, just focus on yourself. if you study really hard for an exam, be happy with your score and try to learn something from ur mistakes.

I'm with you Jonathan06--your post sounds like my life. I started out as biochem (switched to bio...not that much easier surprisingly). My advice is to give yourself one night per week that you do absolutely no schoolwork--regardless. I have 4 finals next week, but tonight at 6 I'm done til tomorrow AM. Also, try to do more effective studying (I know it's really hard to determine how to study for science--it's taken me an entire year to figure out). And as for your school not being very competitive...your major is. You can go to the "easiest" college out there and biochem will be hard. And remember that there are things more important than grades, especially if you're looking at grad school. Get involved in some research, that could get you into grad school over someone with a 3.9GPA Good luck!

I wouldn't worry about it too much. For me it was frustrating at first working so hard for mainly B's and a few C's, but that's just the way it is. At my school it is just extremely hard to get A's. Just do your best, don't stress too much, and have fun :)

I would advise taking next semester a little easier. Don't take as hard of classes. Take it a bit easier, relax, and go out and meet people. Making friends and getting to chill out for a while can help relieve that stress and depression.

Your stress and depression may also be contributing to you not getting anything out of studying. If you feel like "ending it all" you DEFINITELY need to talk to someone immediately! I really don't think you're not as smart as the other students...what I think it is is that your grades might actually improve if you go out and have some fun and are less stressed about schoolwork. Your time spent studying will be more effective. You might also not be "studying the right way", but I really think you just need a break. Hang in there and talk to a school counseler!

Thanks guys, I will try to take all your advice into consideration. Reading your posts makes me feel better about my situation.

I think the problem is that you're putting everything into school and your self-esteem is completely depending on how well you do in school. I think you should take a lighter load next semester and do some activities that make you feel good and appreciated... go out, have fun! You should get a counselor too; they can help you with strategies to make you feel better.

hey man yeah i'd go talk to someone at counseling (it's not just nutcases that go there), but yeah, don't get discouraged about those other people partying it up and getting better grades, they've found their ideal study habits, and maybe you need to fine tune your studying skills. But just take it easy this winter break, b/c you don't want to burn out or anything.

johnathan06, I know exactly how you feel about studying too hard and not doing as well as you thought. Everything that people have posted here sound like really good suggestions. I guess it will just take awhile to adjust to the college work & work on new study skills. I don't have any new advice other than to take it one day at a time, and I hope things will eventually look up for you.

do you exercise often? if youre feeling stressed i would recommend going to the gym for 30-60 minutes running and lifting weights. jogging and lifting weights are great stress relievers.

You have to let yourself chill out some! Stressing about stuff ALL THE TIME is not helping you whatsoever. I agree with whoever said go to student counseling. They can help you out a great deal. College is not all about grades; you should be making friends and hanging out and going out sometimes. If you get a B instead of an A, then so what? It's not that big of a deal.
