Grade: 10th (sophomore in high school)
GPA (unweighted): 3.8
AP Classes: Taking my first one as AP’s aren’t offered to freshmen at my school- APEuro
I am nearing the end of my first semester of sophomore year, and will be taking my finals next week. I will most likely be getting a B in both Spanish in Acc. Algebra 2, and feel that this will really impact my chances of getting into a UC, as that is my goal.
I do Speech and Debate and am ranked top 20 in my event in California. I have qualified to the State & National Championships. I am planning on running for Vice President for junior year and president for senior year.
However, the two B’s that I am receiving are scaring quite a bit. I am incredibly stressed with the thought of not being able to be admitted into a UC.
What do I need to do to be a competitive applicant to a UC?
First, don’t stress out. You are my kids’ age - as I tell them to do your best.
You will definitely get into a UC if not to UCB or UCLA. Make sure you prepare for SAT and get as best as you can. 10th will be a hard year so will be 11th. After that it gets better
As a senior, here’s my advice: 1 play a sport or take up an instrument. Find what makes you passionate. Your grades are fine, I wouldn’t stress it. Also, junior year you can make up for those B’s.
Why would they take up a sport or an instrument if they are already great at debate & speech? This student has found something they are passionate about – keep working on that instead.
Two B’s would not eliminate your chances for any UCs…even the top ones!
(My daughter with 2 B’s in HS is attending UCLA with Regents scholarship)
May I ask what steps you took in her application process to UCLA? Courses she took, GPA, SAT/ACT score etc. Any deep advice would be very helpful!
