hey, i'm a new member. so sorry for not being too familiar with anything.

i'm entering my sophmore year of high school this year and am very concerned about the EC's i have so far, which are very minimal. i joined key club + french club last year, but was definitely not very active in either of them. i also made it onto the JV lacrosse team at my school.

mainly, i was focused on my work and i ended the year with decent grades [which definitely need improvement], but it's a start. i'm unsure what i want to major in eventually and haven't really found my passions yet, which isn't good. i plan on continuing both clubs and lacrosse but i'm really looking for some unique ECs that i can try. i love math and science, but since i'm asian, i don't think i'm good enough to stand out when i have to apply.

any suggestions?
i'm open to anything.
i would really appreciate it [:

The fact that you're sampling is just fine. Most COLLEGE sophomores don't know what they're majoring in -- don't stress about that.

What will be most beneficial for you in the long run is to be involved in things that interest you -- not just will "look good" to some app reader. If you happen to stumble upon something that's great, you're lucky. If not, then don't worry either. If you happen to need a PT job to help the family make ends meet, or need to care for a sickly relative or whatever -- things happen and not everyone has the supposedly "awesome ECs" yet life continues to be rewarding. The most important thing that selective colleges want from its applicants is passion for learning, first and foremost. ECs are very secondary.

your still early in your hs career. No one on Earth is very involved in clubs in freshman year, and no one expects you to be, just make sure in junior year/senior year u get to be president or vp or something. Grades are important and so is math and science, so excell in those, mabye work on Intel or something, but in order to distinguish yourself from the rest of the super-asians go for some humanities related ec too like young democrats/republicans or model UN or something.

@ T26E4; true for most colleges, true for all state colleges, partially true for most privates. Harvard would beg for a national president of a group to come to their university even if they have a pathetic gpa and non-cc-standard SAT. Most of the time community-only EC's are secondary, but if you become a national office then EC's take a stand above everything else. Dont worry about it though, unless your aiming for HYP there is no need to become a national officer. Grades > EC's if your looking out of the top 15

I went to one of the HYP and I wasn't a club officer at all much less of a national organization. My "leadership" was my school's JROTC (which was pretty high up there I guess). But then again, when I was a HS senior, the admissions scene wasn't as frantic as it is now...

wow, thanks everyone for the quick feedback.
i definitely plan on becoming an officer for those clubs in future years.
but i don't think it's enough to get me into the top schools.

being a national administrator would be something i would be interested in,
but how would you go about applying?

and about Intel? i've only heard about these programs from
this website, otherwise i wouldn't have known at all.
what exactly is it? and does anyone have any personal experience with it?

i do want to find an EC that i'm passionate about.
i'm not very picky and am willing to do almost anything
but hopefully if i'm lucky, my passion will set me apart
from the rest of the smart asians applying :P

sorry for all the questions,
but thanks for all the help [:
