Stressing over UMich

Hey guys I could really use some clarification/reccommendation on what to do.
I am a junior in high school, in a medium-competition school.

Sorry about the long intro, but here is my dilemma. I am an aspiring psychiatrist, and I have looked into the University of Michigan since I was a freshman. It is what I would call my dream school, having a TOP notch psych program. But I am unsure about my grades, my EC’s, and my SAT. Anybody gone to Michigan with grades around this? and do I have a shot? If not, what could I do to achieve this? It really is my dream school. I again apologize for the length.

People get accepted to UMich with these scores. You can always take it again if you feel you can improve 100+ points. Keep doing EC’s related to Psychology. But there’s something I don’t get though, do you want to be Psychologist or Psychiatrist ? Because you need to be a medical doctor to be a psychiatrist (at least in Europe), but psychologist is different.
Michigan will look at your profile as a whole, grades will not reject you on their own, and won’t get you in on their own. So do your best, keep your grades as high as you can, and do EC’s that interest you and in which you can show you are good.

Best of luck

Thank you! Yes, I believe I can possibly improve 100 points, and I will be taking the ACT this upcoming april. To answer the psychologist/psychiatrist question, yes I do need to recieve a doctorate in order to become a pyschiatrist, which is what I want to be, I am interested in the medicinal treatment of patients (and of course the money is not bad either, but that’s not the point) so i plan on majoring in psychology, along with other bio/psych fields, and UMich will definitely help me achieve that, hence the post itself! thank you again! anybody else?

I think you definitely have a shot!
If you can improve your SAT (or get a better score on the ACT) & get your GPA to 3.8 or 3.9 it would improve your chances a lot! Keep in mind they do superscore, so that’s always helpful.
Of course, keep with the Psych ECs; if you can get some psych research internship that would be good.
UMich has told me that attending their summer programs and being around on campus (aka showing interest) is quite helpful. If you’re in-state, I’d recommend volunteering at the UMich hospital over the summer (signup opens April 1 I believe).
In my school, AP Psych is treated as an “easy AP” so unless UMich knows your school well they may not know that it’s impressive to be in it as a junior. I’m sure you planned to do this already, but get a rec from your Psych teacher so he/she can gush about you  and work hard on your essays. That’s all you can do! Good luck!

@itsmyusername‌ thank you! Unfortunately I am out of state :disappointed_relieved: so im unsure on what I should do. I am from New York, would volunteering at hospitals around here be of any help?

@BMBulldogs Certainly! But if you could find a way to be at UM for a little bit over the summer I think that would help. As far as I know, most of their summer programs are more STEM-based, so if there is no suitable program, don’t fret. If you expand on your psych interests in NY that’s a great way to spend your summer as well! Try to show your interest in UM in other ways.
P.S. If you have a Tumblr, umichadmissions.■■■■■■■■■■ answers questions honestly (and you can request a private answer to your question).

Your course rigor is good, however, your SAT score and uwGPA are below admission average. Being from oos, your chance is not great. Your current SAT is at or below the 25th percentile (it was the 25th percentile last year but it is likely to get higher again this year). The admission average GPA was 3.85. Don’t overload yourself with AP and suffer in GPA. Try to recalculate your GPA in UMich way (no subgrades). GPA is the most important factor for UMich as long as you have a reasonable course rigor. 21% of enrolled freshmen last year have uwGPA 4.0 from high school.

Thank you for the input @billcsho‌ I may be starting to think it is much of a reach. I will continue to try to raise my gpa, although im not so sure it will make a drastic difference. Just gotta keep my head up I suppose

@billcsho‌ and additionally, could you suggest any other schools that I meet the credentials for with the grades I have right now, and my career/major interest?
