So I've been admitted to UCR which is 24 grand since i am not legible for cal grant A since my cal grant gpa was 2.89 only. I am not wealthy by any means. At this point it's either community college or UCR. My intended major is economics. Going to a community would mean i'd risk not being able to get the classes i need in order to transfer in the recommended 2 years and going to cc for 3 or 4 years is nothing something I personally want to do. Please give me insightful advice on whether or not it'd be worth it for me to go dorm at ucr or go cc.

UCR cost of attendance for Tuition/Room and Board according the website is $27500. Do you have some scholarship for the $3500 difference? You do realize you are only able to take $5500 in loans out yourself and the rest will be up to your parents. Are they ready to pay for the difference? I really think UCR is underrated and gets bad press. It really is a good school and wish my younger S would consider since he received the Chancellor scholarship but to no avail. You need to sit down with the parents and see if UCR makes sense for all of you.
Good Luck.

If you can get enough outside scholarships to pay for the 1st year at UCR & raise your GPA enough to get Cal Grant A next year, then yes. Otherwise, CC would be the best option. It would be an easier way to raise your GPA (& get the grants) + you’d also have a good chance to transfer to a UC.

It would be great if you had a few more options - but, if your family can’t afford the $25k+ per year, a local CC makes the most sense. Talk to your CC and your target UC about TAG, plan your courses carefully and be flexible about your class times and you should be able to navigate the CC and transfer then graduate on-time.
Good luck.
