Stride projects

This year's projects are out! Any STRIDE scholars find ones they particularly love? I found one that I would DIE to work on!!!!

Then list it as your first choice. You want to e-mail the prof, explaining why it’s your first choice and that if you don’t get it your college career may get off to a bad start with a collapsed lung and hypoglycemia resulting from the disappointment.

oh I already did that. I’m shameless. When I want something, I make it happen

How…Smithie-like. Well done. You just passed the special double-secret probation test. Stand by and wait for instructions.

Did you really mention a collapsed lung and hypoglycemia as I suggested?

No. But I said I was excellant at ironing and making coffee and wasn’t above shameless brown nosing

I’m just looking at the list! Which one were you dying to work on, r6l? I’ve found a couple I’d love, too. :)

So ladies, tell us which projects intrigue you. I’m curious!

I am dying to work on a project proposed by Professor Ernest Benz regarding demographics, genealogy, and Jews in southern Germany in the 1800s. If that isn’t right up my alley, I don’t know what is.

There’s also one involving historical fiction for the stage based on the Deerfield Massacre of 1704 that seems intriguing, and cataloging the letters of an alumna in the archives. That was similar to what your daughter was doing if I recall correctly, CarolynB?

Oh, and there’s a position working with Carol Christ on the Smithipedia. As a Wikipedia addict and devoted editor, that’s something I’d enjoy, as well.

I’m glad we don’t have to request just one project–they’re all so fascinating!

Can anyone give me some sense of the stats required of an applicant to be offered a STRIDE position?

D’s HS GPA was 3.9uw with 1580 SAT (two-scale).

CC’s part owner, Sally Rubenstone, a former Smith admissions officer, said her total app “wasn’t quite Zollman” league, so by implication she’d be near the top of STRIDE. (Zollmans are designed to snare students they think they may be competing with Ivies for, STRIDEs are those they think they are competing with peer institutions for. Accurately figured in D’s case.)

@fendrock: My stats were 3.98 UW GPA with 2260 SAT (780CR, 680M, 800W).

Mine were a longer time ago, but I had a 1480 SAT. Don’t remember my GPA, but I was in the top 10% of my class at a good public high school. Extracurriculars were good, but not Olympic-athlete or cancer-curing good.

Fendrock, my daughter just finished her first year as a STRIDE. I’ve copied from one of last year’s CC posts my daughter’s junior year stats which she sent Smith, and I updated it a bit:

GPA: 98.1 through junior year (I think she wound up with a 98.6–I don’t remember how that translates on a 4.0 uw scale)
Class Rank: 1/183 (she wound up as valedictorian)
SAT I: CR 720, M 670, W 740 (2130)
SAT II: Math I 690, World History 710, English Lit 740, US History 800
APs: US History 5, AP Lang&Comp 5; this year taking AP Calc AB, AP Physics, AP Literature (she wound up with all 5s except Physics which was 4)

I would wager that her three most noteworthy and long-standing ECs were school newspaper (four years, managing editor two years) and youth orchestra (first violin four years, concert mistress two years), and a cappella group (four years, leader senior year). No cancer cures.

Phanatic, your choices of STRIDE projects sound fascinating! The German Jewish genealogy would be incredible. I don’t remember any Deerfield Massacre project from last year so I think that’s new, but the cataloging letters in the archives is definitely similar to what my daughter’s been doing. She’s planning on doing more archival work next year for her STRIDE. The Smithipedia project with Carol Christ seems to be a continuing one. Three down, just three more to figure out!

My D who had somewhat similar stats to Carolyn - slightly lower GPA but in a school where two kids her year got a 4.0 due to very tough grading and slightly higher SAT scores and similar AP’s did not get a Stride but did ED which I think lowers your chances quite a bit since they don’t need to win you over.

Is the STRIDE list of projects available to the general public?

I don’t think the list is out for everyone just yet. Us STRIDErs just got it on Friday

I LOVE the project with Randy Frost on hoarding. He’s exploring whether or not support groups help in ending the problem and also what disorders tend to accompany hoarding

My stats were:

GPA: 4.0 uw
Rank: 3/440ish
ACT: 34 (one and only sitting)
APUSH-5, AP English Lang-5, AP Psych-5, and my senior year I took AP calc, AP Stats, AP Gov and AP World

I don’t think the STRIDE list is available to the public, just to the STRIDE students.

Rocket6louise, the hoarding project sounds intriguing. Now the inevitable question comes: are you an Oscar or are you a Felix? :)

D was offered a Zollman. 5.0 GPA (1/500) 2370 SAT. Bunch of AP’s all a 5. Lots of EC’s and leadership including running the peer tutoring program and conducting peace building workshops in the community. Arts supplement for violin.

Unfortunately despite Zollman we couldn’t make it work financially.

Are there any STRIDE projects in the areas of philosophy, psychology or law?

I think my daughter could find the STRIDE project idea quite enticing…
