Smithie and Proud - Laundry can now be done with the one card - don;t know of that’s new to your time? and we fund a little of that plus I would say from the amount coming home on breaks it’s not a major expense :)

No, we had OneCard laundry when I was there too. I just had to put the money on my OneCard myself, and that money came out of my personal earnings (either from workstudy or off campus jobs I had). My parents never gave me money to put on my OneCard, the cost of sending me to Smith, flying me across the country to get there, and buying my books, made me determined to be as self sufficient as possible.

S&P, I’ll bet your parents really appreciated your being so frugal with your money. Our daughter is very careful with her money as well and I’m delighted she has a healthy respect for what it takes to earn it.

Well I wouldn’t say I was totally frugal, and sorry if I came off as a little priggish @ overwhelmed, I’m sure her D isn’t frivolous with money either, and my parents definitely helped me out with some stuff. I would sometimes be between jobs or I would get a little spendy with my credit card and they’d toss a little something my way. Also the birthday card was a momentous yearly occasion, I always looked forward to putting that crips $20 bill inside on my OneCard. It’s just that I was full pay, and even with a grandfather who believed in “reverse ineheritance” (give your money to your heirs while you’re still alive, when they really need it and before the government takes it all in estate taxes), it was a burden on them to come up with the extra, plus the cost of attendance costs, so I just tried to make sure I did my part to help them.

I don’t mean totally frugal, I just mean thoughtful with money. I wouldn’t want my daughter to completely deny herself having any fun because it meant spending money. College is about learning to make choices and that includes choosing how to spend your money. :)

thanks CarolynB! I find out about a couple more LACs I applied to tomorrow, and then I can try to scramble and book a last minute flight to visit all of them (hopefully). So many decisions!! Did you deliberate much with other schools before deciding on Smith?
