Strong EC's?

I'm a high school student and I was really hoping to get some information as to the kind of ECs that top colleges look for. Specific examples would really help.

Thanks!

I am sure you will receive a lot of responses to this inquiry - but here is my 2 cents worth:

First and foremost, do what YOU want to do, not what you think will impress the adcoms. The fewer the ECs, the better as long as show a lot of depth within them. Whatever your ECs are, each should demonstrate the following:

-long term commitment
-leadership
-demonstrated interest in and outside of the classroom/school
-community service (if applicable)

Hope this helps!

Do any EC that shows impressive success, esp b/c you were involve. Initiate an EC yourself which reflects your passion. I dont think long term committment matters much if you fail to do something spectacular. And remember, "less is more." Dont do a laundry list of ECs.

why don't you tell us what you have in mind?

Start off with listing your strengths and fields you think would be interesting. You'll love yourself later on if you had fun in all your EC's. I personally love staying after school for my clubs and doing extra work for them at home. It's like the college app is a bonus.

I guess I was hoping to do something interesting, something beyond the usual Soup Kitchen, library, etc. I heard doing research is a big plus. Anyone idea how I can get started?

-win a national contest
-start your own business
-assume a large leadership position (class president, etc.)
-conduct research
-get published (research paper)
-volunteer for several hundred hours

-find a cure for cancer

conduct research : Well if u do ..have a proper abstract sent also

Tell us your interests first. Then we can give you suggestions.

To be honest with you, anything works for me. Hospitals, libraries, animal shelters, etc. In fact, I'll do anything to make my application look better =).

Basically I'm looking for something that will make me stand out (even a little), but nothing extreme like going to a different country or something.

first of all we have to know what interests you. hard to believe if your reply is "anything interests me". if that's the case, go ask the person sitting next to you in calss what she does, and do what she does.

what will make you stand out is not necessarily a 'rare' EC. it's the amount of interest you put in that EC, and how you present that in your app. as for the ivies though, the 'correct' sports EC will give you a hook.
