I'm really interested in foreign languages and cultures and have always been. But, I would like to go to a smaller college, as in not the big public universities like Penn State. I would prefer the school to have a variety of language choices, more than just Spanish and French.

I know Middlebury College would be the obvious choice but I don't think my stat's are quite there (yet). I'm a Sophomore, and my unweighted GPA is 3.8; when I've taken practice SAT's my scores have been around 1940.

Anybody have ideas for a school with good language choices and a strong program but has less than 6,000 students?

Take a look at Kalamazoo College, one of the “colleges that change lives” in a distinctive town that also has a state university. K offers French, Spanish, German, Chinese, Japanese, and has a long-running top foreign study program, included in tuition, for all of their students.

Depends heavily on the language. Middlebury is probably the best all around school for languages. Earlham is famous for Japanese. My own school, Grinnell, has incredibly strong Spanish and Russian departments (not to say the other languages are lacking; I’m studying Chinese myself).

Dickinson College in PA is a LAC which stresses a global approach to education and may be an option for you (and you might get merit aid there as well).

Do you already know what languages you want to study? If so, it doesn’t really matter how many the school offers – if you want Arabic and Chinese, and it has those two, then you are all set.

If you want to have the freedom to explore different languages throughout your undergrad career, then consider looking at LACs with strong articulation agreements with a large nearby university. Remember that since language classes typically meet every day, logistics really matter, even within one consortium. For example, it might be a lot easier to get to your Portuguese class at UMass every day if you’re at Amherst rather than Mt. Holyoke, though you can probably still manage it if you are really committed and/or you have a car.

Thanks everybody! I’ll look into those schools
The main languages that I want to learn are Arabic, German and some more with either French or Spanish. Sooo I need to find colleges with those languages. Though those languages aren’t really locked in since I like a ton of other ones too
