Hi-
My daughter is looking at colleges this fall. She's looking for colleges where she can pursue music performance, French Horn, but also has interests in liberal arts subjects.

Any college with a music program requires you take LA classes. You will take fewer LA classes at a conservatory and more at a traditional 4 year school.
Can you provide a little more information? Area of the country? In state or out of state? Big or small school?Does your D wish to play professionally one day? Are her interests in LA just for fun or is she still undecided about her major?

If she’s a strong horn player, look at CIM. She can take classes at Case Western since the conservatory is right on the corner of Case. If she’s a serious musician looking for a professional career, fitting in a lot of extras around rehearsals, studio, orchestral rep class, small ensembles, etc, can be exhausting!

Oberlin.

You might consider some of the schools mentioned in this thread - some have schools of music for a BM while others have strong music programs but it would be for a BA. <a href=“Best Liberal Arts university with best music program? - Music Major - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/1120351-best-liberal-arts-university-with-best-music-program-p1.html

Thanks for the info so far. To be more specific she is looking for a school in the Northeast and of medium size, less than 10,000 students. Any feedback on Bucknell’s strenth in music?

For BM programs, you might consider Peabody/Hopkins, Boston University or Eastman/Rochester. Bard (which is a 5 year dual degree if she pursues BM). For schools with good BA music programs, Williams, Vassar, Swarthmore. Some of these options will also depend on your D’s academic strengths. I’m sure others will chime in with more schools.

Clark University is one possibility. (Worcester MA)

Eastman and Ithaca would be good choices in the Northeast. A few years ago the Ithaca Wind Ensemble came to our high school and our Wind Ensemble played together with them. My S was a horn player and said the Ithaca hornists spoke very highly of the program there. Our band director got his MM at Ithaca and met his wife there, and she was a hornist also. It has an excellent liberal arts program too.
