Anyone have any ideas of colleges which are strong in math but not extremely difficult to get into? My son is very gifted mathematically and wants to major in math. He has a 35 composite ACT, but GPA is approximately 3.5UW/3.8W. He would be a great asset to a math program at a school, but not sure what options would be best for him.
What is your home state?
@almostdonewithhs Kentucky
If you’re willing to go out of state, take a look at St. Olaf?
Even though his stats are very good for university of Kentucky, going to visit might give him an idea of the type of school he is looking for.
Same applies to Louisville but in my opinion, Kentucky is better
What can you afford?
@usualhopeful Nothing expensive. Needs to be somewhere that would give him good financial aid or merit money.
These colleges appear in a Princeton Review category, “Great Schools for Mathematics Majors,” and, though selective, one or more may be receptive to a well-crafted application from a talented mathematics student: St. Olaf, Macalester, Reed, Grinnell, Hamilton. The financial aid at these schools ranges to excellent.
I was going to recommend St. Olaf before I read the whole thread. So this would be the third recommendation for that school. Even with merit aid, it is still going to run about $30K net, which might be too steep? Do you qualify for regular financial aid?
For an advanced mathematics student, a semester in Budapest could be a key study abroad opportunity. As you research further, investigate whether it’s a college’s policy for their financial aid packages to “travel” with their students to “approved” off-campus programs.
@ColdinMinny He would qualify for financial aid so a school that meets 90-100% need would work.
Yup, another St Olaf vote :). You should run the net price calculator on their website.
