Strong SAT, Weak GPA. Plz help. I will chance back.

So, I'm a junior and I have a weak GPA mostly due to being an idiot freshman year, and procrastination/laziness.
GPA: 2.93(Should be 3.0 by the time I apply)
SAT: M 700, CR 660, W 630 (Total: 1990/2400. This was my first real SAT btw, so I'll hope to improve when I take it again in the fall)
I'm taking honors chemistry, honors history and honors algebra 2 this year if that helps.
I'm attending an above average public highschool.
EC's:
4 Yrs Football.(2 will be varsity. Possible awards next fall if i have a good season.)
I'm going to highschool in MA.
Schools:
UMASS Amherst
UCF(Univ. of Central Florida)
ECU(east carolina)

Get that GPA up and I think your in :)

Help me out plz

I don’t have much time to get my gpa up, but I’m trying to get it over a 3. Thanks…

anyone?..

bump…

bumppppppp

I think GPA is a very important factor nowadays and, as far as I know, students from MA usually have a high GPA so that is definitely not looking good. I would really just say that you should get that GPA up to above 3.1 or 3.2 and then get your SATs up to 2100 to maximize your chances. You could, also, possibly write about your procrastination during freshman year leading to your low GPA and how you learnt from it and improved, for your essay.

Thanks, I got you back.

Where does your GPA place you in the class? top half/bottom half…? that will make a difference…and is it weighted or unweighted?

I’m not sure. Our class ranks don’t come out until the beginning of next year. I’m also not sure if that’s weighted or not. It’s just what my last report card said.

While GPA is important, adcoms at those schools may not necessarily be as draconian about it as you fear, especially if it is mainly due to Freshman grades. I would say just try to bring it up if you can, but if not still apply, you have a good shot.

I would say that you’re in at UMass, probably in at ECU, and will be in at UCF if you get the GPA up to at least a 3.0. Getting that 3.0 will really be crucial to seal the deal.

Thanks for the replies. Man I hate how a 2.9X looks so much worse than a 3.0. I’m going to try my best to get that up.

^^that’s why I asked if it’s weighted or unweighted…you may not have to wait if you can get an idea of how many C’s you have earned…if not alot, then it’s prob unweighted; if you have earned a decent amount of C’s, then it’s prob weighted…for those few honors courses…

If I had to guess (and this would be a total guess), it’s unweighted…

This could possibly be an issue! My high school often has Deans of Admission from colleges all over the country come and give presentations to our IB class about college, SATs/ACTs etc. A common statement is “make sure your GPA matches up with your SAT scores.” If they don’t, then a college could deny/waitlist you thinking either: you didn’t try in high school, or your school’s classes were way too easy. Your best bet is to stand out in other areas: sports, awards, volunteering, ECs, clubs, etc.

Alright thanks, maybe if I can write a good essay explaining why my GPA is so low I’ll have a better chance.

Well, for SATs Umass only looks at CR/Math. The 50th precentile in CR/Math is 1170 at Umass Amherst(which has the highest scores of the 3 schools), so a 1360 (at minimum) CR/Math puts me around the 90th precentile in SAT’s. I’m hoping this will give me enough of a boost, even though my gpa is ~ .6 of a point lower than their average.
What do you guys think?

bump…

You aren’t getting it to Amherst with that GPA. You’ll probably get into UCF and ECU though.

^
You aren’t mistaking Umass Amherst with Amherst College are you? I would think I have at least a somewhat decent chance of getting in.
