so i got deferred this past friday and i applied early. i had asked what my chances were to get in reg. on the "chances of the deferred" thread, but im also wondering if anybody knows if UNC has a stronger RD or ED pool? i feel happy that i was even deferred after looking at the stats of others. I'm just bummed out that i have to wait more. but i was just wondering if UNC has a stronger RD or ED pool.

I have never seen this anywhere in writing but based on anecdotal information and three to four years of watching CC posts this may be the case.

I think as in most schools that are not binding EA, the early pool at UNC is stronger overall than the RD pool which is why there are more deferrals especially for OOS students. This results in impacting EA applications not only because of the people who have clearly identified UNC as their number one choice, but also because so many other people who have applied to "more elite" schools who then also apply to UNC or UVA thinking they could be a good alternative.

While a basically flawed strategy, it does serve to pump up the number of applicants and make the early pool more select.

thanks for giving me some hope. i have been wanting to go to UNC since i was in 7th grade, especially when i realized psychology was a top major. getting in would mean the world to me and even more to my parents which is unfathomable. they can rest easy, knowing their 12-16 hrs/day for 5 days for about 25 years has paid off.

i have read that the pool of applicants for all schools is usually better in the fall since those are the people that will go no matter what if accepted and they know that they gpa and sat scores are the best they can do. the rd kids usually wait to bring up the grades or scores. and, many early kids are so qualified that they apply knowing that they are not locked in and if they get into an ivy or other school they prefer, then they can go there instead. which opens up spots to others!

BEWARE: hs counselor said please do not bother them like some have suggested. they are overloaded right now with rd applicants and do not want more unnecessary papers to read. he knows one personally.

yea i dont plan on bothering them at all. i called to ask if i could send in a paper with about 6 new/(or for some stupid reason i forgot to mention) extracurriculars and community service. the woman said it would be fine and they would read it. im sending just that and my MYR.

I have always understood, based on published data, that applying early gave the applicant a 100 point boost in the SAT. I might agree with folks if UNC had ED where the student was committed to the school but in EA (with no single choice criteria) I would say it is better to apply EA if you want to improve your chances.

ohh, well i guess nobody really know except admissions, all i've got to do is finish these last 2 weeks strong. send in my MYR and EC/Comm. Serv. and HOPE. man... i really hope i get in.
