What would you say the strongest departments are? Does Colby have any weak areas?

I’m going to be a Soph this fall, so it’s only one year of experience to go on, but Econ and Biology are excellent departments. Very clear teaching styles and excellent professors in my opinion.

Also, try searching for the word “majors” in the “search this forum” option. There are a few threads like this from previous years that might be interesting to look at.

I can answer this. Though our most popular majors include Biology, International Studies/Relations, Economics, Government, English, and History, we have very strong smaller departments as well. Physics and Chemistry, for example, have great statistics in terms of employment and graduate school, and the classes are challenging but worthwhile. Math is quite similar. On the other end of the spectrum, our Art Department is also quite strong; we have great teachers, and lots of resources like the Art & Music Library and the Museum of Art.

my son is interested in Colby but I am concerned about job placement. Do you know how the grads do getting jobs with larger international companies, perhaps those from the Northeast (say, NYC to Boston)?

Students do very well with job placement and graduate school placement, including with large firms in the Northeast and international firms. The college is known for strong international focus, with a high number of students studying abroad and international students at Colby. The college has strong ties with the financial sector through Barclay’s, which is headed by a Colby grad who is active on the Board of Trustees. Another Colby grad is head of the Boston Fed and is also actively involved with the college. One or both have children at Colby, I believe. Unsure what comparable colleges you believe would provide better placement opportunities. Of course, if your son could go to Harvard or Princeton, he might make better connections there…

I was wondering how the math program was at colby. Does anyone know if there is an applied math program?
