Hello!

Recently I've started considering a career in structural engineering as I've always been fascinated by buildings but was never creative enough to be an architect. Math and science tend to come more easily to me as well so I figured structural engineering might be the perfect career for me. However I am a little unsure as to what path I should take to get my degree.

I'm from Boston and I prefer not to go to school anywhere further than the immediate areas around the city. Money is also a bit of a concern as well. So I want to know if it'll be fine if I decided to go to a community college (say, BHCC) for my associates in engineering and then transfer to a four year college to finish my UG studies and get a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. Would it make a difference? Also does it really matter which school you go to for you UG degree? I would really like to go to MIT for my studies but again, money is a problem. So I opted for the cheapest option in Boston and that seems to be Wentworth Institute of Technology.

Before I actually decide to go to WIT, I want to ask anyone who has experience with the school or might know about it, is WIT a good school to go to for civil engineering with a concentration in structural? Does WIT do a good job preparing the fundamentals and knowledge for a career in structural engineering? Does it actually matter what school you go to for your degree? I was thinking that maybe after getting my CE degree at WIT, then I can go to MIT for my masters.

Please let me know if this is a good or probable option. I realize I've asked a lot of questions and I want to thank anyone who took the time to read and reply to my inquiries. I really appreciate it!

Also one last thing I would like to know: is structural engineering a good career choice? Even in this economy?

Thanks in advance!
