Hi im a senior in high school and im intrested in majoring in Structural Engineering. I looked online and found that UCSD has a great program for SE. but when i looked up accredited programs for this major (CE) i couldnt find UCSD. Does this mean that they aren't accredited for this program?

i don’t know what you’re talking about, because structural engineering at ucsd is accredited. i’m not sure what search you did but if you use [Accredited Programs Search](http://www.abet.org/AccredProgramSearch/AccreditationSearch.aspx) , structural engineering shows up.

they actually have both, sorta:
“The Department of Structural Engineering offers an unique engineering program leading to the B.S. degree in structural engineering which is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET). The Department of Structural Engineering also offers a traditional non-accredited engineering program leading to B.S. degrees in engineering sciences. The B.S. programs require a minimum of 148 units, plus college requirements in humanities and social sciences.”
Home | Structural Engineering;
but as an SE major I haven’t met a single person that was on the non-accredited track

The reason why I thought it was accredited was because when i went on accredited program search i looked up by accreditation for civil engineering because structural engineering wasn’t there. But now that i look up accreditations for UCSD i see Structural Engineering. haha . Thanks guys :]

And Experiment8, being a SE major would you say that the program focuses more on buildings or on other stuff like bridges and rams. because i was looking for something that focuses more on buildings. I learned of Architectural Engineering, but i heard that architectural engineers usually come out of college and get structural engineering jobs. So i figured that maybe taking structural engineering would look better than architectural engineeering for those jobs.

Re: architectural engineering vs. structural engineering
The vast majority of schools allow you to do an architecture ‘track’ or structures ‘track’, but give you a degree in civil engineering.
I can’t think of many programs that will actually award you a degree in either ‘architectural engineering’ or ‘structural engineering’, other than Cal Poly and UCSD…
It’s rare enough, that it’s impossible to make any sort of generalizations about similarities or differences in curriculums.

Architectural engineering students from Cal Poly have no trouble getting jobs or getting into top grad schools.
S.E. students from UCSD also have no trouble getting jobs or getting into top grad schools.
From those I’ve talked to (a handful from each of the two schools), I would say that Cal Poly’s coursework better prepares you for certain aspects of the field (conceptual design and construction) and UCSD better prepares you for research. Both are equally respected overall.

i wana know the salaries of architectural engineering & the minimum requirements to start first year

What experience do you have with either program that would lead you to that conclusion?

@alvins previous post, you can emphasize your degree towards ‘building’ structures specifically depending on your focus sequences, but in reality it’s all just structural analysis, which deals with the components of a structure (beam, arch, etc) rather than the ‘overall structure’ itself. Because of that you’re prepared to work with any type of structure, be it a typical building, an aerospace vehicle, offshore rig, ship… whatever.

Thanks everyone :].
@mandizira The starting salary that i saw after looking up Cal Poly’s graduate status report is probably around 48000 - 55,000, thats depending on what job you take when you graduate. If you become a structural engineer, its closer to the 55000. and the min requirements for the cal poly slo program, which in my opinion is a little too harsh for a cal state, is a gpa of 4.05 and superscore on the sat in CR and Math with 1350ish and ACT around 30-31. They do not take writing sections of either test. AND when you apply you only compete with other ARCE apps not with other majors.

@Experiment8 Thanks, but does being able to work on more types of structure mean that you will get a better job or be paid more ? Also, i recently posted a thread that asked people to chance me :] but not alot of people replied so im going to try to post it here again. Please give me your opinion.
"Hi im a high school senior and im planning on applying to UCSD next year for Structural Engineering. Can anyone tell me my chances of getting in and if i need to work on something . Please tell me where to improve and ill try my best to work on it :]

Unweighted gpa - 3.85
Weighted - 4.25

7 APs
AP Calc AB - (4 on test)
AP Chem. (4 on test)
AP US History (3 on test)
(senior year)
AP Economics
AP psychology
Ap Rhetoric
AP Calc BC

SAT 1 ( I know it might be a little low but im going to try and retake it. I just wanna know what my chances are with these scores)
Math-660
CR-590
Writing - 570

i also had one that was
Math - 760
CR-480 (probably bubbled wrong -_-)
Writing-620

and im taking SAT 2 for math chem and history in October

Thanks everyone! " and
"i have 150 hours of internship, officer of one club and member of another (nothing significant though) , volunteer work at library but probably only 15-25 hours. Im planning on taking the ACT in September and SAT in October and will be willing to retake them if necessary. Does anyone know if UCSD has the student profile for students who entered last year for Structural/Civil Engineering department alone?? If they have any of that info? "

If anyone else would like to give their opinons, please do :]

Alving:

I was actually impacted into structural engineering; I’m an incoming freshman.

Your GPA is the most important factor for UCs as I’m sure you know, so as far as getting in to the school you should be fine, especially with all your extra currics. In comparison to me, I got a

630? on SAT I math
640? on SAT II math 2

but I did get a 5 on the calc AB exam.

IMO I think you’ll cruise in.

lol thanks hungyhung what you said makes me feel alot more secure with the college stuff :]. btw is it ok if you tell me what your gpa , sat 1 , sat2, or act scores because i want to see where i stand in the process. Also, does impacted mean you were forced to go in the major because everything else was full? haha sorry im not really familiar with the terms.

dang i actually don’t know my own stats, i was never that into this whole college acceptance ordeal.

to the best of my knowledge:

weighted GPA: 4.5
unweighted: 3.6/7
SAT I: 1930; 630 670 630 math crit and writing respectively
SAT II: 630 640 630 american history math II and english literature respectively
never took the ACTs

and impacted majors are the big ones that everyone wants to get into, at UCSD I’m pretty sure they’re mostly bio majors and then mechanical engineering. Yes I was impacted out of mechanical, but I found out structural was the one I actually should have been going for the whole time.
