I am a rising junior. For me, ACT Science is the hardest part of the test and always drags down my score a ton. Here is the average score I get on practice tests:
English: 34-35
Math: 33-34
Reading: 34-35
Science: 24-26
I am aiming for a score of 35, and my E, M, and R scores seem pretty on par with that. However, my score significantly drops when you factor in my Science score (from a 34 to 32).
English and Reading aren’t really issues; I only struggle with basic big idea concepts (~3 questions total). Math isn’t really an issue; I just struggle a little bit with reading questions slowly and fully understanding them (I get stuck on ~2 questions).
However, for Science, I consistently make careless mistakes and sometimes come across ~2 or so questions that I can’t seem to find the answer of. I’ve been doing prep for just around a month so far, and am really stressed out.
My test is in 10 days (July 14) and I can’t seem to increase my Science score at all. I always get too exhausted from the previous sections to do well on Science.
Data Representation isn’t too bad for me, but I struggle with Research and Conflicting Viewpoints passages.
I am not being tutored, and self-study/learn through Prep Scholar blog articles, the ACT Black Book, the ACT Red Book, a Kaplan ACT Book, and practice tests.
I would really appreciate any help and feedback on how to improve my Science score so that I can achieve a 35 as quick as possible.
Hi, I’m in kind of a similar situation. I’m a rising senior and I’m also taking the ACT on July 14th (it will be my 3RD time!). Science is always my worst subject, and like you, it’s the only thing hindering my 34+. I bought the book “For the Love of ACT Science” by Michael Cerro (on Amazon for about $30). I’m not finished with the book yet, but I’ve been taking practice tests and have been getting 30-31 on the science section! Believe me, this is a significant improvement from my last science scores! I highly recommend this book – it goes through all the types of problems in the science section, gives shortcuts, and also has two full length science practice tests.
Don’t worry, we both still have time to improve!!!
@mmshan691 That’s amazing!! Good luck on your ACT!!
I just took a practice test right after posting this post, and I got a 34 on my practice ACT section!!! Hard work has paid off but I really hope I just didn’t get really lucky today, so I’ll probably be taking more practice ACTs soon to make sure that this is a permanent improvement rather than a one-time thing
practice science section* and 35 overall!!!
Hey! So I had the same problem with my score. My other sections were exceptional and much higher than the science score. All I can say is that it definitely gets better after taking the test several times. It also is very helpful to get a prep book with practice questions and work on the science portion to understand the different types of questions. Good Luck!
