Struggling college students.. Are you using or applying for food stamps?

I heard that College students are eligible for food stamps if they are in school at least part time and are working 20 hours a week.

I heard a lot of college student are struggling with tuition, rent, food and etc.

I think food stamps will lessen the strain on their wallet.

Many do.

I am thinking about applying. It should be pretty straightforward right?

Are you independent? Yes, the application is pretty straightforward. If you are working 20 hours per week, you may not qualify if you are a family of 1.

I am 25. My parents are helping me with rent + Tuition though. I will moving out for college so I think I would be classified as independent.

Based on what you wrote you will not be eligible for food stamps. Double check the policies in your state.
You must be part of a federal or state funded work program where you work 20 hours a week

Are you on public assistance or disabled
Do you have a child who is under five and you are the primary care taker

You are 25 and your parents are helping you with rent and tuition? Instead of looking for federal assistance, maybe you should consider another job.

I know of students with disabilities that preclude part-time employment, who receive food stamps. The ones I know are on government assistance in other areas as well (such as Medicaid). Once a student is over 21 the parent’s income is not considered.

^^Parents’ income might be included if they live in the same household.

Food stamps are administered by the states and states can change the requirements for qualifications.

Strangely worded thread. Seems more like a reporter fishing for stories.

I was on foodstamps as a college student. I was working well over 20 hours per week. When the ACA went into effect, I was on medicaid too.

If you are a student looking for help, see if your college has a food pantry - D’s college has a food bank for students needing food.

Agree with @scmom12, many of the SoCal CC’s and state colleges have Food Pantries. You can go to the Student Unions to get more info on hours and products.
