Struggling in Engineering

Hello, I am a Mechanical Engineering major but I am struggling in some of my classes. I do not understand my engineering coursework in statics and writing visual basic macro programs. I am not 100% sure that engineering is right for me, but I was wondering do I just keep working through it. It seems as though I work more than my classmates but still get average to below average grades. It is very frustrating. I have considered changing my major but I do not know if I should give up yet, cause it might get easier and more interesting in the future. Any advice?

My sister is majoring in Civil at Purdue. She struggled a lot last year and has found that her sophomore year has been easier because its more focused on her major. I suggest asking upperclassmen in your program what they think, bc they’ve been through it.

There are so many different types of engineering. what type of career do you want?

I would like to do something in sports engineering.

No one in most engineering majors has it easy. They might seem to have it easier than you, but they may not.

No one wants to go around and brag about how hard they tried after they got a B or a C. But, you will hear tons of people say ‘oh I didn’t study and still got a XX… blah blah blah.’ Trying to say “I’m just that smart!”.

If you want to quit mech. engineering because it is hard, there are a lot of easier majors.

I had a lot of trouble with statics initially until I transferred schools. The different textbooks and atmosphere allowed me to do better. You don’t want to quit something just because it is difficult but you also have to know when to throw in the towel. I was in computer science before I did mechanical engineering and I wasted too many semesters trying to do well in CS and had to transfer out of the college because my grades were too bad to choose a major in the engineering department before the deadline.
