Hey everyone. I'm a second year engineering major at a UCI, and I've kind of hit an all-time low. I've been doing pretty badly academically, barely passing my math and failing practically all of my physics classes. I've been warned about my poor academic performance and have been given the option to change majors assuming I maintain above a 2.0 GPA until my transition to a new major is completed.

However, I was given this notification late in the quarter (around Week 4 of 10), and it was already too late to change my schedule. I failed my Physics final and I did decently on math, but I'm afraid I might be kicked out due to my F in Physics.

I'm troubled on what to do next. I was planning on sticking around and continuing my education under an Economics major or something, but the possibility of me being kicked out at the end of the quarter brought me to a new realization: should I just drop out, take CC classes to avoid the hefty UC tuition, and re-enroll in a university? Or if prompted to leave, should I appeal and continue my education at a UCI under a new major? I'm really lost, and it's been bugging me over the past few weeks, and I'd really like some advice.

I would wait to see what happens. You may be able to stay, and that in my opinion is better than leaving and trying to get back in later before you know their decision.

Are you currently on academic probation before fall quarter started?

There’s really nothing you can do now since finals are over. You should basically just wait until winter quarter starts and talk to an academic counselor and get things straightened out.

Good luck!

Unless you are on academic probation, I doubt you will be kicked out at this point. But if you are there another semester, I can almost guarantee that you will be placed on AP. Just apply yourself and you will get out of this. I would stay where you are for now though.

I would stay if I could.
I dont know how you handle your classes but I would take take 3 courses max. Two easy GE and one/two for your major. If the course you know your going to take is hard then take two GES. Then add a course or two in your summer quarter. Your GPA will jump.
For me, studying in an university isn’t just having good study habits but also knowing how to play the game. For example, we choose your professor, ask our friends what their midterms/finals are like. Choosing the amount of courses to take is just the same. Hope this helps.
Good Luck!

A 1.5 or below will result in a possible S.T.D. without prior probation.

You need to talk to your counselor immediately.

I just received an email a week into the quarter stating that I will be disqualified unless I appeal. My overall GPA is around a 1.85 as of the end of Fall quarter. The classes I’m currently taking are really easy GEs to hopefully get my GPA up, but I’m not sure if I’ll even have the chance to do that since I may be let go this quarter.

Is that possible? I mean, notifying me a week into the quarter that I will be disqualified from the university, rather then over winter break? Or will they let me continue until the Spring quarter, and reassess my performance then?

Just see what happens.

Sometimes, they will let you keep taking classes under the threat of S.T.D.

Just cross your fingers, get high enough grades, and hopefully you can continue.
