Struggling to Find Ways to Afford College

So I really want to go to UC Irvine because they have a career path I want but I’m running into problems with paying for college. I’m coming in from out of state, so it’s more expensive and while my parents can help me pay, we can’t afford the full cost. I’ve applied to at least 20 scholarships but to no avail and I just heard back (if I understand it right) that I didn’t get any assistance from the school/government. I’m super down because I know my parents and I can’t afford full tuition and I really don’t want to have to take out loans. I don’t know what else to do.

UC campuses don’t give a nickel of need based aid to out of state students. Costs are about $60,000 a year…depending on the campus.

Expect to be full pay.

What else can you do? Did you apply to any affordable colleges? How about instate publics in YOUR state?

What other acceptances do you have.

How much can your parents pay from earnings and savings (without borrowing)? That + the ~$5500/year federal student loan + ~$3k if you work summers is your budget. If it won’t pay for Irvine then you have to look elsewhere. Did you get accepted to any affordable schools?

If you parents could not afford an out of state college, why did your parent allow you to apply? People like your parents need a Suzy Ormond class. Can I afford it? No. DENIED.

@student1322 You need to go to an affordable option. What is your major?

What affordable options do you have? Lots of students can’t afford their first choice school.

What career path/major does uci uniquely have that can’t be gotten at a bunch of other places? Keep in mind that a school may not have a certain unique-sounding major, but the career path can still be achieved.

If you tell us what career path you’re looking at and what state you live in, there are plenty of knowledgeable people here who can provide advice and suggestions that will probably be more affordable than attending a UC school as an OOS student.

@student1322

Why are your affordable options?

No college experience is worth a full 60,000/year, even if your parents could pay everything.

@OhWhatsHerName Amen. I wish I could like your comment twice. This forum is usually sane – except for when kids post about tippy tops and everybody loses their mind over a brand name. Ugh.

If you can’t afford it don’t go because later on you’ll regret owing a lot of money with interest.
