Hi,
I have already wrote an essay talking about how working with kids with disablities got me into adulthood for the common app essay but I am having overwhelming opinions to write about my mom passing away. I am really having trouble writing the second option but I am wondering if I should continue with it or just keep working working on my first idea because I feel that it is not overdone like a death?

Thanks for everyones time.

Go with the essay that you think represents you better and you’re able to write well on. As long as you show you have character, either essay would be fine if written well.

I’m pretty sure the death of your mom meant a lot to you and greatly impacted your life. Personally, I don’t think your situation is “overdone”… what I consider overdone is when they talk about a great great great grandmother or something like that. I don’t know you, but I’m pretty sure your mom’s passing is a big part of your life.

Either would be solid topics, but I would advise you to write BOTH of them. Yes, I know it seems tedious, but you will never know for sure which one is going to be better until you write both of them out and compare.

Good luck! :)

I agree with both posters, that you should try writing both if you have time and asking people whom you trust to see which one they prefer. However, if you choose to write about your mom’s death (my condolences by the way) make sure to focus on yourself. It’s easier to focus on yourself when writing the first essay. Good luck! :)
