If you are struggling academically at UVA how easy is it to get academic support or is it hard because it is a considerably large school?

There are many venues to help you if you are struggling in a class. There are many tutors that can and will help you with classes. You can also find help in your classmates.

Thanks but do you know how that help can compare to that of a liberal arts school?

I cannot answer that.

How do you locate a tutor? Is it very costly?

while i never needed a tutor, i needed major help in econ 202. i'm pretty much retarded when it comes to not subjects not in the history/english/music field. I met my TA for the class for about an hour a week 1 on 1 help--at no charge.

my general experience is that help is always available its just most people don't seek it out. an e-mail to the professor/ta is usually all it takes.

Many tutors are volunteer. You can check with the professor or the class' department office to find these tutors. Some TAs are helpful while others just make you even more lost. There is also the professor themselves, but that just like the TAs. There are various ways to get help for free, but if they can't help you then you can pay for a personal tutor.

i tutor just about anyone in brown who needs math help, and usually get "paid" with food/etc if at all.

on the other hand, many places request high sums but they have the best tutors. the ta and professor are usually a good free source of "tutoring" but you have to meet them halfway, you know? they're not just going to tell you the answer, you're gonna have to work for it. not in some misconstrued way like i know youre thinking haha.

Hazelorb, where do you find tutors that charge but are "the best tutors"?

Thanks

http://uva.cute.googlepages.com/ from how they advertise, to tutor you have to have gotten an A in the class at UVA (no easy feat), or be a major and a 3rd yr and have an A-.

It appears they only handle math and science. Is that because these are the most difficult, or just the speciality of the particular group.

those are the ones most ppl need tutoring in, as those are the ones i always hear people complaining about.
