I am deciding between majoring in marketing advertising or management or cis. idk what to do. i feel like i can be good in managing like campaigns and what consumers like and dont like what to show in the media. but i feel like cis is good too because i like technology and learning about how technology can help business is interesting to me too. But I dont understand how CIS majors end up insurance agencies and work with banks. I would like to decide what technology to use and how it helps the business. i want to tell people what should and shouldnt be there based on consumers interests. i am lost on what to major in. any advice? thanks in advance.

Sounds like you want MIS, which is the management version of CIS.

CIS tends to be for people who actually like programming business applications and spending more time with computers than humans.

MIS is more like, how you put it, “learning about how technology can help business” and handling general IT and network infrastructure, being the misc. tech manager.

That is, aside from the fact that many schools can’t even tell the difference and use the names interchangeably or roll both into simply “IS”, so take my advice with a grain of salt since I don’t know which schools you’re looking at.

Im in a similar position as kamiz27. I am currently a management major at the robert h. smith school of business umd. I dont know if I should do only management or double major with something like IS, accounting or finance. So far ive seen the top students at my school being double majors so I want to also be competitive. I dont really like accounting because of handling all the paperwork and financial statements. I dont think I will like finance for the same reason. I think IS or marketing would be good second majors for me. Can anyone give me some advice?
