I am a HS senior applying as an undergraduate and one of my prompts is a time in life my perspective changed. My two topics I don’t know to choose are these:
(1) I have been in SGA for 3 years, the first 2 I was in charge of the Technology Team and a Creative Team member and this year I am the Executive Vice President. At my school we have a whole class period for SGA (along with leadership studies) and we also are in charge of Homecoming Week, the school’s carnival, community service events, volunteering on a local radio show speaking on our opinions and school fundraisers. I have truly learned what being a leader is from this and it has changed my perspective from wanting to sit back because I don’t want to “boss people around” to becoming confident enough to speak up on my opinions and want to be an inspiration to others.
(2) Ever since I have became a vegetarian and now vegan I have expanded my knowledge so much on the environment, it’s more than a diet to me now because I have learned just how harmful the human race has been to our earth and continue trying to adjust my lifestyle for the sake of helping the environment. The reason I’m so torn on this one is because it relates and has effected my choice in a major, environmental engineering.
So which topic do you think is the better choice?
Write an essay on both and see which one flows better.
It wouldn’t hurt writing about both and seeing which essay topic works the best. I wouldn’t necessarily rule out one topic right away without writing about it because that topic could be the one that works. Personally, I think that topic #2 sounds more interesting and personal to you. It not only relates to your major, but your life overall. You said that it helped you realize more about the world, and it made you adjust your lifestyle. So, I’d go with the second option, However, if you’re still unsure, writing two different rough drafts for your two topics is a good idea.
Topic #2 seems more unique and more down-to-earth (maybe literally), so I’d suggest that one. Topic #1 almost suggests commemoration of accomplishments, which you do not want to rub the admission officers the wrong way in.
