Stuck between UCSB and UCD

I got accepted into both with an Undeclared major and now I'm having trouble deciding between the two. For the past year, I've dreamed of SB but for superficial reasons like "it's pretty". Now that I know that my future is at stake, I'm taking things more seriously. I just visited Davis today and it's insanely huge and insanely boring. I know that the academic aspect is more well-rounded meaning that if you're undeclared, whatever you decide to do, you can do it at Davis. But I also went to SB and the atmosphere is so perfect. The way I think, if I don't like my surroundings, I won't be able to function to my full extent. I'm not a drinker or drug abuser nor am I a bookworm or over-achiever. I've heard of the reputations but they don't seem to phase me. Where should I go? I have until May 1 - that's 8 days!!!

My possible major choices are so opposite - if this helps to narrow down anything at all: business, technology, pharmueticals, and maybe a minor in biology.

I'd appreciate any help :) Please reply soon!

UCD is so much better academically and they do have a party scene though if small. There's even this cool thing called the tipsy taxi which is used for... partiers. Its safe and costs a buck.

Plus UC Davis is better with bio.

I would despute Davis being "much better academically". I think most people will recommend that you go where your heart tells you. I think Davis and UCSB are pretty close academically, and it looks like UCSBs atmosphere would be the thing that tips you into the favor of choosing UCSB. Of course, I'm sure others different have opinions on this issue.

I'm surprised to hear someone claim that UCDavis is arguably "better" than UCSB. I'm sure you can find a list somewhere of the desirability and academic excellence of the UC's in rank. Davis is going to be great in vetrinary science, I suspect.

I'm not sure whether either of them has a business major -- maybe economics?

They are so different; Davis is in the middle of nowhere, I think; flat, lots of bicycling. UCSB is perched over the Pacific on the outskirts of Santa Barbara. I know people who have attended both and have loved their experience. They're just very different places. You have to decide which you think you could best call home for the next four years. Decide whether distance from your real home is an issue. It appears you're from San Jose, so you're used to being landlocked -- you are capable of living without the ocean view outside your window. I think most young people in your position would choose UCSB, but it sounds like you should take a look at the course catalogue for each and see which one serves your interests best.

Ack I just read it wrong. I'm thinking UCSC in which there is a major difference academically.

Why are you being so tough on yourself? If you got into Davis and Santa Barbara, you're a smart kid. Trust that kid! And be nice to her, will you?

"Pretty" isn't superficial. It's your gut, and it probably means more than "nice palm tree." You liked it. You wanted to be there. You got in. Go!

Or picture yourself @ Davis, wondering if you'd be happier in Santa Barbara. Imagine wasting study (or play) time researching transfer procedures. That's no way to spend your freshman year.

If Davis bored you, choose SB.
