okay, so it's been my DREAM to go to NYU since i:
a.) discovered what college was and b.) visited the campus.

i'm in the IB program and am in the top 7 or 8% of the class/county. my grades are okay but not spectacular..my unweighted gpa is about 3.2 or 3.3 and weighted is like 4.9..... i'm not a very good test taker and got a 520 Math, 550 Reading and 630 Writing score on the sat. [which i'm retaking for the 3rd time in oct.] and for sat II a 500 in math and 550 in history =/ i'm a journalism major and have AMAZINGGGG extracurriculars--85% of which being related to my major and mostly things i've been involved with even prior to high school

i'm probably not a candidate for financial aid and my parents think i should apply RD vs. ED because i'd get plenty of money offers from other schools...but it's my dream school and i'm afraid i won't get in.. idk what to do?

I'm not an expert, but on the surface your numbers are on the low side. You'd have to present yourself really well on the application and recommendations, imo. here are the facts from the website. The SAT score range doesn't include the writing (which was your strongest score). Your total is 1070, that's substantially lower than the 'average'. But you won't know unless you apply, so go for it!

Academic Statistics (Four-year Programs)
Average High School GPA: 3.63
SAT Score Range (middle 50%): 1300 1430
ACT Score Range (middle 50%): 29 - 31
Ranked in Top 10% of High School Class: 70%

your scores are a lot, a lot lower. but i was told that i would never get in from people... including my teachers, and i'm sitting in Rubin now. it's worth a shot.

chanel...i hate to be a sophomore with application experience, but i got in with a 1090. and "any school" is a very wide range. i'm sure 1070 would be swell for some state schools and exceptional for all community colleges.

again, scores are only part of your application. if you have a certain "low" score it doesn't mean you have no chance.

The combo of an unweighted (which is what they'll look at) 3.2 gpa and a 1090 SAT score, especially with those also low SATIIs, make your chances less likely than someone with a high gpa and the same low scores. Not to say it's impossible, it's just unlikely. It's worth a try, to apply, if you truly love NYU, but I'd recommend that you have a good list of matches and safeties also on your list. I think you're going to have to go fairly far down the list of selectivity to get "plenty of money offers" with those stats, regardless of your extra-currics. Good luck.

thanks guys. and lindsey, if you don't mind me asking--what did the rest of your app look like since your sat's were in the same range as mine..and yessss you better believe i'm taking them again in october!

and i'd be applying cas...against all the other science people..does that impact it if i have a declared major?

i served as president of an audition-only theatre group at my school, lots of theatre at school, some in the community. i started the gay-straight alliance at my school, was president for two years. i did some track and field and swimming when i was in 9th and 10th. was in a gifted and talented english/history courses since middle school. took ap us history, ap world history, ap art history, ap english, ap literature. got a 4 on my ap literature and 3 on all the others. (i was pretty lazy in hs except for the end of my senior year...actually, after i got into nyu...which explains low scores.) i was in the top 11% of my class (thanks to easy freshman courses). i got a 30 on my ACT, but I don't know if they really looked at it b/c I didn't take the writing part.

umm...not sure if i'm leaving much out. honestly, though, i think i got in b/c of an essay i wrote about having to fight with my school (in the biblebelt of tx) to start the gay-straight alliance and get in touch with the ACLU. that's my theory, anyways.
